Bakersfield Bests Grand Canyon for Rowdy Run Win

Bakersfield – Rene Cortez and Carlos Armendariz each scored, and goalkeeper Filippo Dadonemade six saves, including five late in the second half, as California State University, Bakersfield held on to defeat visiting Grand Canyon, 2-1, in front of an announced crowd of 1,437 at The Main Soccer Field, Thursday evening. The win was the first of the season for the Roadrunners, who improved to 1-2-0, while the Antelopes fell to 1-2-0.

"Really pleased with how we responded to the way we played last weekend," said Head Coach Richie Grant. "The mentality tonight was that we must be tighter, that we must be disciplined. We thought the goals would come for us."

First Half…
* The Roadrunners scored for the game's first goal in the 19th minute, when forward Rene Cortez headed a long Juan Pablo Alvarez corner past GCU goalkeeper Anthony Munoz to make it 1-0.
* CSUB's defensive posture stifled a dangerous 'Lope attack in the first as the 'Runners held GCU to just two shot attempts and only one shot on goal.
* Bakersfield put all three of its first half shots on frame.

Second Half…
* Senior captain Carlos Armendariz doubled the Roadrunner advantage in the 53rd minute, when he took a pass from Rene Cortez, snuck through the GCU back line and finished technically into the lower right corner.
* GCU's Shaun Joash pulled his team within a goal in the 80th minute when he pounced on his own rebound to beat Dadone.
* Five of Filippo Dadone's six saves came in the second half, several on point-blank chances from GCU attackers.
* The Lopes racked up 11 second half shots, including six on goal.

Notable…
* Senior captain Carlos Armendariz' goal was the ninth of his career and his third from the run of play.
* Rene Cortez figured in two goals for the first time in his CSUB career, scoring the game's opening goal and assisting on Armendariz' strike.
* Filippo Dadone has 15 saves through three games this season.
