Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Fitzgerald, Perez De Gracia Score, but CSUB Falls in Stockton

Stockton, Calif. – Pacific used three second-half goals to put away the California State University, Bakersfield men's soccer team, 4-2, Sunday evening at Knoles Field in Stockton, Calif. The Roadrunners dropped both ends of a season-opening road trip, falling to 0-2-0 in the early going. After several first-half chances just missed, newcomer Andres Perez De Gracia and sophomore Jacob Fitzgerald each scored for CSUB in a wild second half.

"Tonight was a much improved performance four our side," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "Pacific are a good team and matches like this will make us sharper for our upcoming home games."

First Half…
  • Bakersfield's first big chance of the game came off a set corner piece in the 22nd minute. After an initial save the ball bounded to Andres Perez De Gracia at the top of the box, but the 'Runner newcomer's shot sailed just over the bar.
  • In the 34th minute, captain Carlos Armendariz drove a free kick just right of the Tiger goal.
  • Pacific registered the game's first goal in the 41st minute, when Derick Roque recovered from a spill in the 18-yard box and found Mohamed Abdullahi alone in the middle for a far post finish.
  • CSUB won a corner with 10 seconds remaining in the first and nearly equalized, but Armendariz header was knocked off the line by a diving Tiger defender.
  • Bakersfield outshot Pacific 8-5 in the first half, with each team putting one shot on target.
  • The Tiger held a 5-2 advantage in first half corners.

Second Half…
  • Pacific doubled its lead on the counterattack early in the second half. Mohamed, who scored the game's first goal, set up a 48th minute strike running down the right wing before slotting a pass across the six-yard box for an easy finish by Ryan Her.
  • Her scored again, just five minutes later, on an identical run down the middle of the box, assisted this time by Omri Yazid and Derick Roque.
  • Andres Perez De Gracia rifled home CSUB's first goal of the season in the 60th minute, taking a pass from a cutting Stephon Marcano and drilling a low line drive into the left-side of the goal.
  • Pacific's Avery Whipple extended the Tiger lead back to three with a long scoring strike off an innocent looking corner kick in the 73rd minute. Samuel Saiz Herraiz assisted.
  • Jacob Fitzgerald netted his first career goal in the 88th minute on a 24-yard strike after a long give-and-go up the right side with a streaking Bryson Hankins.
  • The Tigers and 'Runners each took 10 shots in the second half, with CSUB holding a 18-15 advantage for the game.

Notable…
  • Goalkeeper Filippo Dadone made his second straight start in the 'Runner goal, while newcomer Andres Perez De Gracia made his first career start for CSUB.
  • Perez De Gracia snapped a 150-minute Roadrunner season-opening scoreless streak with his second half drive.
  • Perez De Gracia led the 'Runners with seven shots, including three on goal, while Carlos Armendariz attempted six shots of his own.
  • Goalkeeper Scott Pengelly made his first appearance of the season in relief of Dadone, netting twelve minutes of action.
  • Harry Downing, Nathan Jimenez and Atli Stefansson drew second-half cautions for Bakersfield. Pacific was also shown three yellow cards on the night.
  • Pacific's Derick Roque finished with three assists, while Ryan Her scored twice for the Tigers.
