'Runners Fall in Season Opener at San Jose State

San Jose, Calif. – California State University, Bakersfield goalkeeper Filippo Dadone made eight saves in his career debut, including six in the second half, but the Roadrunners dropped a physical, season opening match at San Jose State, 2-0, Thursday evening. The Spartans opened the scoring just five minutes into the game and never trailed, improving to 1-0-0, while Bakersfield fell to 0-1-0.

First Half…
  • The Spartans jumped on top early, when Kasper Poulsgaard slotted home his first of the season into the bottom left corner following an SJSU set piece in the 5th minute. Angel Iniguez assisted on the play.
  • Junior newcomer Filippo Dadone made the first two saves of his career in the first half, facing three shots on goal in the period.
  • Harry Downing and Rene Cortez were cautioned in the first half, alongside SJSU's Joel Garcia.
Second Half…
  • SJSU's Joel Garcia doubled the Spartan lead in the 69th minute. After CSUB's Filippo Dadone turned aside his first attempt with a sprawling save, Garcia pounced on a loose ball dribbled back against the grain and scored into an empty net.
  • Dadone, Jacob Fitzgerald and freshman forward Nathan Jimenez drew yellow cards in the second half, while SJSU's Mario Barocio and Finlay Wood were also whistled.
  • Wood was then shown red in the 87th minute, putting the Spartans down to ten men for the final three-plus minutes of the match.
  • Newcomer Bilal Mihoubi had a pair of chances late in the match but saw each turned aside by SJSU keeper David Sweeney in the center of the goal.
Notable…
  • The Spartans outshot CSUB 16-7, including an 10-2 margin in shots on goal, and posted eight corners to two for Bakersfield.
  • CSUB goalkeeper Filippo Dadone finished with eight stops, the most by a 'Runner goalkeeper since Nov. 13, 2019, when Detre Bell made ten against San Jose State in a Western Athletic Conference quarterfinal victory.
  • Forward Nathan Jimenez registered a shot on goal in the first half, while Bilal Mihoubi put two on target in the second. Mihoubi and captain Carlos Armendariz each posted a team high two shot attempts.
  • Ten Roadrunners made their career debuts, including the goalkeeper Dadone and the freshman Jimenez. Bakersfield's Juan Pablo Alvarez, Bilal Mihoubi, Conor Walsh, Andres Perez De Gracia, Atli Stefansson, Cesar Olivares, Ian Reis and Marco Manzo also earned their first career minutes.
  • CSUB collected five yellow card cautions, matching the 2021 season high set in a loss at San Diego State and matched in a win over UC Davis.  The Spartans added three cautions of their own for a total of eight in the match.
  • Team captains Armendariz and defender Harry Downing each played a full 90 minutes.
