Cal Capitalizes Late, Slips Past CSUB 1-0

Bakersfield, Calif. – Visiting Cal scored late in the second half to beat CSU Bakersfield, 1-0, in a Sunday night exhibition contest at the Main Soccer Field. The Roadrunners rallied for a series of chances in the final moments, but could not equalize, dropping their second-straight pre-season nail-biter to open the 2022 campaign.

"The most important thing is we improved from Friday night, which is quite a challenge during the pre-season when you're practicing twice a day," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "Our intensity was much better tonight, and it really was an even contest, as a pre-season exercise this was better than any training session we could have."

Cal struck in the 78th minute capitalizing on an uncharacteristic turnover in the defensive midfield for a goal off the counterattack. Rohan McEligot pounced on a loose ball in space and delivered a perfect pass across the goal to Jake Himelstein for an easy finish.

Bakersfield nearly found the equalizer on several occasions in the final ten minutes. CSUB's best chance came off a set corner piece when midfielder Bilal Mihoubi sent a volley just over the bar.

Senior captain Carlos Armendariz then sent another long volley over the top of the Cal goal, before forward Rene Cortez' header was turned aside by Bear goalkeeper Marco Brougher moments later.

Cal out-shot CSUB 6-5, while the Roadrunners managed 7 corner kicks to the Bear's six attempts.

'Runner goalkeeper Filippo Dadone worked a scoreless first half, making two saves, before giving way to freshman Damian Alguera at the break.

Bakersfield returns to action on Aug. 19, with one final exhibition contest at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, Calif. CSUB bested the #17 Lions at The Main Soccer Field during the 2021 pre-season schedule.

CSUB then opens the regular season at San Jose State on Aug. 25th, before hosting their home opener on Sept. 1 against Grand Canyon. Season and single-game tickets are available and can be purchased online at GoRunners.com/Tickets or by calling 661.654.BLUE.
