Roadrunner Men Drop Exhibition Opener

Bakersfield, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield dropped its season-opening exhibition contest to defending Division II National Champion Cal State Los Angeles, Thursday evening at The Main Soccer Field in front of an announced crowd of 381. The Roadrunners, competing in just their third day of organized team activity, carried play for much of the final 65 minutes but could not equalize despite several strong second-half chances.
 
"It was evident that this was a new group just beginning to come together," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "We lacked a bit of rhythm but that's the purpose of a game so early in camp. We know a bit more about what we'll need to work on."
 
Bakersfield nearly opened the scoring in the 48th minute, when senior captain Carlos Armendariz pushed a sneaky effort through a pair of Golden Eagle defenders and just off the inside of the near goalpost.
 
CSULA responded less than seven minutes later when A'Tonal Torres found Alex Rodriguez alone on the left side of the box. Rodriguez beat CSUB goalkeeper Filippo Dadone back to the far post for the game's only goal.
 
Dadone finished with one save on two shots faced splitting the game in the 'Runner net with sophomore Sucre Herrera. Herrera made a pair of first half stops.
 
Bakersfield newcomer Bilal Mihoubi was a consistent threat attacking on the left-wing, including a driving shot in the 65th minute that tested CSULA goalkeeper Julian Adalandsvik.
 
The Roadrunners return to action this Sunday, Aug. 14, when they welcome Pac-12 foe California to Bakersfield for a 7:30 p.m. exhibition kick off. CSUB's regular-season opener will take place on Aug. 21, on the road at San Jose State.
