Women's Track & Field, Miranda Miller Earn USTFCCCA Honors

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced All-Academic Awards for the 2022 track and field season on Monday. California State University, Bakersfield women's track and field and pole vaulter Miranda Miller earned team and individual honors, respectively.

The CSUB women's track & field program has been recognized by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association eight years in a row while Miranda Miller is the first women's athlete to earn an individual All-Academic honor.

She joins past CSUB men's track and field USTFCCCA All-Academic recipients Gabriel Gaeta (2019) and Karnell Grimes (2014).

The criteria for selection to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team require all student-athletes on the institution's NCAA squad list to have a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher, including the most recent grading period. Individual honorees must have participated in any NCAA Championships and sport a 3.25 cumulative GPA or higher.

The women's team had 17 participating athletes above a 3.0 and finished the 2022 spring semester with a 3.33 cumulative GPA.

"I am so proud of the women's team as a whole for their commitment to academics and earning this team recognition for an 8th straight year," said CSUB Director of Track and Field, Cross Country Marcia Mansur-Wentworth. "We have a team culture that puts a premium on academic excellence. This is a fantastic honor for those who make academic success a top priority."

Miranda Miller was named the 2022 Big West Field Athlete of the Year, after winning a conference championship in pole vault – the first Division I title of any CSUB women's track and field athlete. She competed in the event at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, becoming the first female Roadrunner in history to reach nationals at the Division I level.

"Miranda leads by example in all that she does, and I am so proud of her season," said Mansur-Wentworth. "She has had a season of many firsts for CSUB women's track and field, and I couldn't be more proud to see her earn one more recognition to cap off her record season!"

In the classroom, Miller accumulated a cumulative 3.93 GPA as a Kinesiology major, clearing well above the USTFCCCA minimum academic requirement.

Miller finished the regular season with eight wins and was sixth in the West, 18th in NCAA Division I rankings, and 36th in the United States as reported by the International Amateur Athletic Federation. Her career best clearance, 14 feet and one and a quarter of an inch, is the current Big West Championship meet record and conference record.

A sophomore in athletic eligibility, Miller will return for two more seasons on the runway at CSUB with nothing but her own glass ceiling waiting to be shattered.
