Five-Run Fourth Lifts Mustangs Past 'Runners

San Luis Obispo – Cal Poly scored five two-out runs in the bottom of the fourth to come from behind and beat visiting CSU Bakersfield 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The Mustangs clinched a series victory with the win, outhitting the Roadrunners 9-7 to improve to 12-7 in Big West play, while CSUB fell to 9-11 in league action.

"I thought our guys competed hard and showed a lot of character after a tough loss last night," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "That was a game that could have gone either way. They got the benefit of a bang-bang call and put up five runs in the fourth. It was just too much to overcome."

Bakersfield starter Jaykob Acosta worked six strong innings in making his fourth-consecutive start. Four of the nine hits he allowed, and all five runs against, came in the decisive bottom of the fourth inning. Acosta was saddled with the loss, falling to 3-4 on the season.

Mustang starter Travis Weston earned the win, scattering six hits and an earned run across seven innings of work.

CSUB catcher Bailey Seeger opened the scoring with his second home run of the season. Seeger jumped on the first pitch of the second inning and drove it over the fence in straightaway centerfield.

Aaron Casillas was 2-for-3, collecting his second multi-hit game of the series. Michael Pollard was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the 'Runners.

How It Happened...
T2 | Bailey Seeger jumped on the first pitch of the second inning and deposited his second home run of the season over the centerfield fence, lifting CSUB to an early lead. The 'Runners made it 2-0 when Michael Pollard lifted a soft line drive over short to score Aaron Casillas, who had singled earlier in the frame.

B4 | Cal Poly batted around in the fourth, scoring five times to take the lead. Regan Doss picked up an RBI with a four-pitch walk to put the Mustangs on the board and Matt Lopez scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at two, before Nick Marinconz and Joe Yorke added run-scoring hits to make it 5-2.

B8 | The Mustangs picked up an insurance run in the eighth when John Lagattuta walked, moved to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on Marinconz' sacrifice fly to left center.

Notable...
• Seeger's second-inning home run was Bakersfield's 28th of the season, the third-highest single-season total in program history trailing only the 2009 (36) and the 2010 (42) teams.

• Pollard's second inning RBI single was his first base hit since a two-hit game against Pacific on March 11. He finished the day 1-for-3.

On Deck...
The Roadrunners and Mustangs will wrap up their three-game conference series with a Sunday matinee, beginning at 1 p.m., at Baggett Stadium on the Cal Poly campus. Neither team has announced its starting pitcher for tomorrow's finale.
