CSUB Sweeps UCSB to Win First-Ever Big West Series

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A slow offense on Friday caught fire Saturday as the CSU Bakersfield softball team battled UC Santa Barbara in a doubleheader down 1-0 in the series. The Roadrunners would win the first game against the Gauchos, 8-4, before earning the program's first-ever Big West series win with a 5-1 win in the series finale.

Bakersfield would out score UC Santa Barbara 13-5 in the doubleheader on Saturday to close the weekend on top and earn the come-from-behind series win.

"What a response from yesterday," mentioned Head Coach Crissy Buck-Ziegler. "This has been coming for this team. They played for 14 innings and grew up a lot today."

CSUB 8, UCSB 4

The `Runners came out of the dugout swinging as Bakersfield's offensive aggressiveness led to seven runs in the top of the first inning. CSUB third baseman Shaylene Fuimaono got the scoring started when her double to the gap plated a pair of `Runners. Karissa Munsey's first collegiate hit later scored another run before Cieana Curran's bases loaded walk put CSUB ahead 4-0.

Cieana's older sister Cydney Curran came up to bat for the second time in the inning and, with two outs, hit a bases-clearing triple to cap the seven-run outburst. Cydney, who came into the weekend ranking fourth among all active NCAA softball players in career triples, tallied her 17th-career threebagger.

Bakersfield's starting pitcher, Kaycie Kennedy, threw effectively in the first two innings, but the dangerous Gaucho bats started rolling in the bottom of the third. UCSB used a few extra-base hits to plate four runs before reliever Kirsten Martinez could end the threat for CSUB.

In the top of the fifth, Cieana Curran hit a triple of her own, scoring Savanna Montoya and giving Bakersfield the 8-4 lead. Martinez came back out and continued stifling the Gaucho bats on the way to her first victory since Mar. 16. A junior college transfer, Martinez pitched five innings, scattering just three hits and a walk while allowing just a single run.

Cydney and Cieana were joined by Munsey as a trio of `Runners to tally two hits each in Saturday's first game. Cydney recorded a career-high four RBI on the day while Fuimaono went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and two RBI of her own.

CSUB 5, UCSB 1

CSUB carried the momentum of Game 2 into its rubber match against the Gauchos, scoring five runs while holding UC Santa Barbara to one run in the first inning. Munsey recorded the first of four team RBI, tying the game in the top of the second and getting to second base on a ball hit left center. Cydney Curran later reached on a fielder's choice, bringing in Munsey for the 2-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Savannah Montoya jacked a solo home run to give the Roadrunners a two-run edge heading into the bottom half of the inning.

The sixth inning saw another pair of runs from the `Runners behind a triple from Cieana Curran who nailed a pitch to left field and over UCSB's outfielder that allowed Maya Molina-Villareal to score. In the next at bat, a wild pitch gave way for a sprinting Curran to cross home plate for the fifth run scored.

Montoya and Cieana each tallied two hits, one RBI, and one run in Saturday's series finale. Cydney and Munsey were also instrumental in the win recording a triple and double, respectively, in crunch time.

Next Week

CSUB (8-22, 3-9 Big West) has closed out its two-week road trip and will return to Bakersfield to prepare for a Big West home series next weekend. The `Runners will play host to Cal Poly, Apr. 15-16, in a three-game series at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
