Cal Poly Takes a Pair of Games from CSUB in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A nine-inning pitchers' duel went the way of the visiting Cal Poly Mustangs in Friday's Big West Conference doubleheader on the home field of the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners. Cal Poly utilized the momentum gained by the 4-1 victory to go on and sweep the twinbill with a 6-1 win in Game 2.

"I thought Reina Castillo did a really good job," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Bakersfield's 11th-year Head Coach. "We had multiple opportunities to win the [first] ball game and we didn't clutch up. We put her in a bad position, we made her throw more than we should have, and that's what happens. Cal Poly have more experience and they clutched up. We've got to be able to answer and have timely hitting when we need it."

On the day, Bakersfield got multi-hit performances out of a trio of `Runners: Shaylene Fuimaono (3-for-8), Karissa Munsey (2-for-6), and Cydney Curran (2-for-6). Curran also reached base two other times on walks while second baseman Samantha Martinez was 1-for-5 with three walks against the Mustangs.

Castillo, a native Rialto, Calif., pitched an outstanding first game for Bakersfield put took an unfortunate loss in the ninth inning. The freshman threw all but one out in the extra-inning contest, allowing just one unearned run through regulation.

CSUB 1, Cal Poly 4 (9 inn.)

CSUB left fielder Kaia Johnson used speed to create problems for Cal Poly in the bottom of the first inning. A pair of steals followed by a Mustang error allowed Johnson to score, giving the game its only run until five innings later. Cal Poly capitalized on a CSUB error that would have ended the top half of the sixth. With two Mustangs in scoring position, a clutch RBI single from Hailey Prahm tied the score at 1-1.

Bakersfield squandered a pair of quality chances to walk off in the seventh and eighth innings. In both frames, CSUB loaded the bases with just one out, but both times Cal Poly's Paige Maier shut the door on the `Runner opportunities.

In the top of the ninth, the Mustangs finally broke through and plated three runs against Castillo, who finished the game with 138 pitches thrown. The `Runners were unable to overcome the 4-1 deficit as Maier picked up the victory.

CSUB 1, Cal Poly 6

Cal Poly rolled its momentum from the series-opening victory right into Game 2. The Mustangs got an RBI single out of designated player Lily Amos and they looked poised to add on with bases loaded and no outs. After a pop up got the first Mustang out, a bizarre play featuring a dropped, shallow fly ball turned into an inning-ending double play for the `Runners.

The Mustangs extended their lead in the third inning thanks to a bases-clearing double from Xiara Diaz, making the score 4-0. CSUB finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth as Curran's 18th career triple turned into a run after Johnson's sacrifice fly.

Cal Poly added a pair of insurance runs in the top of seventh, pushing its advantage to 6-1, and Bakersfield could not mount a comeback, falling for the second time on the day.
