Hawai'i Swings Past CSUB in Honolulu

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The CSU Bakersfield softball team could not slow down the hot bats of Hawai'i on Saturday as the two teams closed out their Big West Conference series with a doubleheader. The host Rainbow Wahine raced out to an early lead in Game 1 and earned a 10-1 win before slowly pulling away from CSUB in the series finale, taking that contest by a 5-1 final score.

CSUB 1, Hawai'i 10

The home team jumped out to an early, 5-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. The 'Bows turned four hits into a five-run frame, capped by a two-run homer from first baseman Dallas Millwood.

CSUB plated its only run of the game in the top of the third inning with the Curran sisters leading the charge. Cieana Curran recorded a two-out double before her older sister, Cydney Curran, tallied an RBI single to make the score 5-1.

In the bottom half of the third, Hawai'i capitalized on unsteady pitching from the `Runners, converting three walks, two hit batters, and an error into five more runs. CSUB kept UH off the scoreboard over the final two innings, but the `Runners could not get their offense rolling and fell in five innings by the 10-1 final score.

CSUB 1, Hawai'i 5

UH jumped out to another fast start, plating three runs in the bottom of the first off the power of a pair of home runs. Bakersfield responded with a run in the top of the third when Cieana singled and later used her speed to score on what turned into a three-base throwing error.

CSUB starting pitcher Reina Castillo kept the 'Bows relatively quiet over the next four innings, but Hawai'i broke through to pad its lead in the bottom of the six. Three-straight doubles resulted in two more runs for the 'Bows, who took their 5-1 advantage into the seventh where they solidified the series sweep.

On the game, Laela Minnich posted an impressive, two-way performance for CSUB. The junior college transfer went 2-for-3 at the plate while also tallying eight putouts at first base, a position where she was making her first start of the season.

Next Week

CSUB (8-28, 3-15 Big West) will return home to prepare for a three-game set against CSUN (17-28, 7-11 Big West), Apr. 30-May 1, at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
