CSUB Defense Can't Slow Matadors Down

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A slow start gave way to disappointing results on the scoreboard for the CSU Bakersfield softball team in Saturday afternoon's Big West doubleheader. The Roadrunners gave up eight runs to the visiting CSUN Matadors in the first inning of Game 1, and while CSUB played much better the rest of the day, Bakersfield still dropped the pair of games at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.

CSUB's big, early deficit aided CSUN in taking a 10-0, five-inning win in the opening game of the series. The `Runners earned a 1-0 lead midway through Game 2 of the doubleheader, but the Matadors stormed back to earn a five-run victory, thanks in part to CSUB's five errors.

"We talked about making sure we know what our backbone is, what are we consistent with, and we did not play good defense today," said CSUB Head Coach, Crissy Buck-Ziegler. "I was really not happy with the way that we showed up. I think Reina Castillo threw a really good ball game for us to have a chance to win that second ball game."

The `Runner defense converted on a handful of difficult, flashing plays like the one below, but Buck-Ziegler said her squad's defensive effort lacked consistency and focus in the routine moments.

While Bakersfield put `Runners on base fairly consistently against the Matadors, Buck-Ziegler emphasized the need for clutch hitting to begin scoring more runs: "That's been our Achilles heel all year long. I'm liking how Kaia Johnson is turning it over to the top of the lineup. We have the right people up to bat when runners are in scoring position, now we have to produce the runs."

Johnson and fellow outfielder Cieana Curran hit well on Saturday with the pair going to the plate back-to-back in the No. 9 and No. 1 spots, respectively. Johnson went 3-for-4 on the day with a double and a run scored while Curran went 3-for-6 as Bakersfield's leadoff batter against CSUN.

Castillo, a freshman pitcher, threw another complete game in the Game 2 start, but came out on the wrong side of the results. The right-handed hurler scattered nine hits over seven innings while walking no Matadors and allowing just three earned runs.

CSUN enjoyed a productive day up and down the lineup as eight different Matadors tallied RBI on the day. CSUN pitchers Kenedee Jamerson (Game 1) and Alexis Martinez (Game 2) each earned complete-game victories while scattering just nine hits combined.

CSUB (8-25, 3-17 Big West) will return to the Roadrunner Softball Complex on Sunday to close out the league series with a final game against CSUN (19-28, 9-11 Big West). First pitch between the `Runners and Matadors is scheduled for 1 p.m. (PT).
