Late Surge Pushes Hawai'i Past Visiting `Runners

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – A late surge pushed the home team to a victory in Friday night's Big West Conference series opener between CSU Bakersfield and host Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine scored seven runs across the fifth and sixth innings to earn a 10-3 victory over the Roadrunners.

Bakersfield stumbled out of the gate as the 'Bows jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Three hits and a pair of CSUB errors helped Hawai'i take the early advantage, but CSUB would rally two innings later.

In the top of the third, Cieana Curran delivered a clutch, two-out RBI single to score first baseman Karissa Munsey. Curran then stole second and wheeled her way to home plate on an RBI single from Savanna Montoya as Bakersfield made the score 3-2. In the top of the fourth, CSUB loaded the bases with one out, but UH's Briana Lopez got out of the jam while keeping her one-run lead intact.

The hits kept on rolling into the fifth inning for CSUB as Bakersfield put `Runners on the corners with no outs. Samantha Martinez's ground ball scored Curran as Hawai'i watched CSUB tie the score at three runs apiece.

Hawai'i exploded for five runs off five hits in the bottom of the fifth, regaining the lead over Bakersfield, 8-3. In the sixth, the 'Bows plated another pair of runs to lead 10-3 and UH was on the brink of sealing the deal early, but CSUB got the out it needed to ensure the `Runners would get their last ups.

Bakersfield loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh, but a game-ending double play cut the rally short as CSUB finished the contest with eight `Runners left on base.

Curran, a senior outfielder from Ewa Beach, Hawai'i, went 2-for-4 in the game with an RBI and two runs scored. Fellow outfielder Savanna Montoya was 2-for-3 from the plate while driving in a run of her own.

CSUB (8-26, 3-13 Big West) and Hawai'i (16-15, 10-6 Big West) will return to the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium on Saturday to close out the league series with a doubleheader. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 5 p.m. (PT) in Honolulu.
