`Runners Drop Home Doubleheader Against Titans

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Hosting its first-ever Big West Conference home series, the CSU Bakersfield softball opened the weekend with a doubleheader against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. The visiting Titans, who were voted the league's preseason favorites, earned a pair convincing of victories against the Roadrunners.

CSUB (4-17, 1-4 Big West) struggled to get the offense rolling in Saturday's doubleheader as the `Runners tallied just four hits. All four of those hits came in Game 2 as Myka Sutherlin (19-12, 4-1 Big West), reigning Big West pitcher of the week, threw a no-hitter in the first game. Sutherlin's efforts led Cal State Fullerton to a 6-0 victory to open the day.

"I think [Sutherlin] did a nice job with her offspeed, mixing that in and she wasn't afraid to throw it back-to-back," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Bakersfield's Head Coach. "The second pitcher, she had a good down ball. We started to make a little bit of an adjustment on her, but that's when they made the change."

Buck-Ziegler went on to talk about what she believes her team needs to do in order to come out and be more competitive on Sunday: "Hitting is so mental; I think that's where we're at right now. We're mental about it, but I think we're working our way through it and they are trying to hold each other accountable to have a good mental approach to the game. I think that's going to be the difference in the ball game tomorrow."

When the `Runner offense finally did get rolling in the second game of the day, it was a bit too late as CSUB found itself in a big, early hole. The potent Titan lineup exploded for seven runs in the top of the first inning, establishing early control of the contest.

CSUB pitcher Kaycie Kennedy settled down for a solid game after the early stumble, but the `Runners were only able to plate one run in the second game. Bakersfield's Laela Minnich tallied an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning, plating Kaia Johnson, who used her speed to work her way into scoring position twice on Saturday. CSUB fell 10-1 in the six-inning contest.

The `Runners and the Titans will return to the Roadrunner Softball Complex on Sunday to close out the series with a single game. First pitch of Game 3 in Bakersfield, Calif. is once again set for 1 p.m. (PT).
