Defense, Pitching Earn CSUB a Split with North Dakota

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Hosting North Dakota in a pair of games Wednesday afternoon, the CSU Bakersfield softball team earned a split against the visiting Fighting Hawks at the Roadrunner Softball Complex. UND picked up a 2-0 victory in Game 1 before CSUB responded for a 2-0 win of its own in the second game behind a combined shutout from Kirsten Martinez and Kaycie Kennedy and a handful of outstanding defensive plays.

Martinez, a sophomore from Dinuba, Calif., threw the final four scoreless innings of Game 2 for Bakersfield, capping off a combined shutout. Kennedy, a freshman who hails from Mesa, Ariz., got the start and threw three innings against UND.

The pitching duo had plenty of help on Wednesday as Bakersfield put together a several web gems against the Hawks. From diving catches to ranging throws, the Roadrunner defense backed up its hurlers on the way to the victory, including the final play of the game below featuring Savanna Montoya's laid out grab.

North Dakota scored a run in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a Bakersfield throwing error. The Hawks went on to add an insurance run in seventh on an RBI single from Alexys Campos.

The only hit of the game for CSUB came off the bat of redshirt junior Samantha Martinez, who smacked a double over the head of the UND center fielder. Bakersfield's Reina Castillo took the loss despite a solid performance in the circle, allowing just one earned run while striking out three Hawks in the game.

The `Runners got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to freshman Shaylene Fuimaono. Playing out of position at first base, Fuimaono smacked a triple to right field, then promptly scored on a wild pitch to give Bakersfield a 1-0 lead. CSUB added an insurance run in the sixth when Fuimaono drove in Cydney Curran with an RBI single. On the game, Fuimaono and Curran both went 2-for-3 from the plate.
