`Runners Battle LMU in Doubleheader Sunday

LOS ANGELES – A busy weekend with six games over three days came to a close on Sunday afternoon as the CSU Bakersfield softball team battled LMU in a doubleheader. The Roadrunners came up short in a close first game against the Lions, 4-2, before LMU earned the sweep with a 7-0 win in Game 2.

CSUB 2, LMU 4

The opening game of Sunday's doubleheader proved to be a pitchers' duel through the first several innings. CSUB's Reina Castillo and LMU's Jessica Hubbard were both dealing until the Lions finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning. An RBI single and a pair of `Runner errors helped LMU put three runs on the board.

Bakersfield cut its deficit to just one run with one swing of the bat in the top of the sixth. Designated Player Samantha Pech sent her second home run of the season over the left field fence, scoring Cydney Curran and making the score 3-2.

LMU tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and the `Runners could not mount the rally necessary to come from behind, falling 4-2.

Pech, Curran, and Kaia Johnson all went 2-for-3 from the plate during Game 1. Castillo threw a complete game, allowing just two earned runs to the Lions.

CSUB 0, LMU 7

Bakersfield's offense went cold in Game 2 of the doubleheader with Cieana Curran tallying the only hit for the `Runners. Her older sister, Cydney, drew two walks, but CSUB batters went down to strikeouts 17 times with LMU's Jenna Perez threw an absolute gem of a game.

A two-run homer opened the gates for three LMU runs in the second inning before the Lions doubled their lead with three more runs in the third. An RBI single in the bottom of the sixth made the score 7-0, but the `Runners held off LMU's thoughts on ending the game early.

The bright spot of the game for CSUB was pitcher Kirsten Martinez, who threw 3.1 innings in relief. The native of Dinuba, Calif. scattered three hits and two walks, allowing just one run while striking out three Lions.

Next Week

CSUB (2-12) will return home after six games in Los Angeles to prepare for another busy week. The `Runners will host North Dakota on Wednesday, Mar. 16, in a doubleheader at the Roadrunner Softball Complex. Over the weekend, CSUB will get its first-ever taste of Big West Conference play as the `Runners are headed to face UC San Diego in a three-game series, Mar. 20-21.

Tickets are available for Wednesday's doubleheader at GoRunners.com/Tickets. For fans who cannot attend in person, all five games this week will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
