Bakersfield Drops Two More at UCLA Tournament

LOS ANGELES – Wrapping up the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament on Saturday, the CSU Bakersfield softball team dropped another pair of games. The Roadrunners fell to Fresno State, 8-0, before dropping a 17-1 contest against No. 5 UCLA at Easton Stadium.

CSUB 0, Fresno State 8 (5 inn.)

The Bulldogs got out to a quick start, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Bakersfield set itself up for a scoring opportunity with two `Runners on base in the bottom half of the frame, but a Fresno State double play ended the threat.

The CSUB starting pitcher, Kaycie Kennedy, settled down after the early wobble, going on to retire the next nine Bulldogs in order. An error in the top of the fifth broke that streak and Fresno State capitalized with a two-run homer. The Bulldogs went on to score six runs in the frame, taking an 8-0 lead.

The `Runners fought to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth, but Fresno State got the final out it needed to seal the 8-0 victory.

CSUB 1, No. 5 UCLA 17 (5 inn.)

Cydney Curran got the `Runners on the board early in the top of the first inning. In the shortstop's 162nd career game, Curran sent a line drive flying to the right center gap and the ball cleared the fence for the first home run of her collegiate career.

UCLA answered right back in the bottom of the first, taking the lead on a two-run home run. The Bruins were able to tack on two more runs as UCLA took a 4-1 advantage into the second inning. UCLA added nine more runs in the next frame to extend its lead to 13-1.

The `Runners got out of a bases-loaded jam in the third, but the same situation in the fourth inning led to four more UCLA runs, making the final score 17-1.

Curran, a sixth-year senior, went 2-for-2 on the game.

Tomorrow

CSUB (2-10) will travel ten miles down the road to visit LMU (16-10) for a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch at Smith Field is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. (PT) in Los Angeles.
