CSUB Falls to Fresno State, No. 5 UCLA

LOS ANGELES – The CSU Bakersfield softball team returned to action on Friday afternoon, opening the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament with a pair of games. The Roadrunners fell to both Fresno State and No. 5 UCLA at Easton Stadium.

CSUB 1, Fresno State 9 (5 inn.)

CSUB created a good opportunity to get on the board in the top of the first inning by putting two `Runners in scoring position thanks to a Cydney Curran one-out double. Fresno State got out of trouble by striking out the next two `Runners, then the Bulldogs capitalized on a pair of CSUB miscues in the bottom half of the frame to take a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third, Cieana Curran proved once again how dangerous Bakersfield's speedy student-athletes can be. The outfielder legged out a bunt single, then quickly found herself at third thanks to a stolen base and a throwing error. On a ground ball, Cieana slide into home, beating the tag and tying the score at one run apiece.

The Bulldogs used five hits, including three doubles, to take a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Fresno State nearly scored another, but Cieana threw out a runner at home to keep CSUB's deficit to just four runs. The extra-base hits kept on coming for the Bulldogs, who plated four more runs in the fourth inning. Fresno State went on to finish out the 9-1, five-inning victory.

CSUB 0, #5 UCLA 14 (5 inn.)

The Bruins capitalized on several walks and a few timely hits in the bottom of the first inning, plating nine runners in the frame. CSUB relief pitcher Reina Castillo held the Bruins scoreless for the next two innings, but UCLA broke through again to add on five more runs in the fourth.

Bakersfield's hitters were overwhelmed by the arm of three-time All-American Megan Faraimo, who struck out all 15 batters she faced in a dominant perfect game.

Tomorrow

CSUB will return to Easton Stadium for a pair of rematches on Saturday. The `Runners and the Bulldogs will face off once again with first pitch set for 11 a.m. (PT). At 4:30 p.m., CSUB and UCLA will match up again and that game will feature a video broadcast. For links to the broadcast as well as live stats and tickets, visit GoRunners.com/Live.
