Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late LBSU Run Sinks CSUB on the Road

LONG BEACH, Calif. – With 17 lead changes and 16 tied scores, CSU Bakersfield's men's basketball game against Long Beach State was one of the Roadrunners' closest games of the season. Despite a season-high scoring effort from Kaleb Higgins and Justin Edler-Davis' second-straight double-double, CSUB fell short against the Beach in the Walter Pyramid, 74-65.

"We got some great looks at times, but we just missed some shots that we should have made," said Rod Barnes, Bakersfield's Head Coach. "I thought our kids gave great effort today. [Long Beach State] have a great basketball team. We keep getting close, but we have got to get to the point where we can close games out. The effort was there, but the execution was not there late in the game."

Higgins, who hails from Pine Bluff, Ark., tallied 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting for the `Runners while Edler-Davis posted 16 points and 10 rebounds in the game. CSUB equaled LBSU in most statistical categories, but the free throw line once again proved to be Bakersfield's downfall. The Beach hit 23-of-31 shots from the charity stripe while the `Runners went to the free throw line just nine times, converting on six attempts.

The first half featured back and forth action between the `Runners and the Beach with the two teams playing to 10 tied scores and nine lead changes. CSUB went to the locker room tied 39-39 with its host as Higgins' 15 points led all scorers. Edler-Davis added 12 points and seven rebounds in the period. CSUB shot 55 percent from the field and 44 percent from three-point range in the period, but LBSU's advantage at the free throw line kept the Beach right with the `Runners.

A tight score and lead changes persisted late into the second half, but the Beach was able to gain some separation down the stretch. LBSU closed the game on a 17-7 run and Bakersfield's efforts to tie the score once again fell short as CSUB suffered a 74-65 defeat on the road.

Bakersfield (6-10, 1-5 Big West) will close out its four-game road stint this weekend with one final game away from the Icardo Center. CSUB will face off against Cal State Fullerton (13-6, 6-1 Big West) in Fullerton, Calif. with tipoff set for 7 p.m. (PT). Saturday's contest will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
