Hot Shooting Sends Titans Past `Runners in Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. – The hot shooting of Big West Conference leader Cal State Fullerton (14-6, 7-1 Big West) proved to be too much for the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners to handle Saturday night. The visiting `Runners fell behind in the second half and could not close the gap, suffering a 75-61 defeat on the road.

"We have to show up and play well, but we didn't do that well tonight," said Rod Barnes, Head Coach of the `Runners. "I thought tonight we showed up offensively, we just didn't make shots."

Bakersfield overcame an 0-for-7 shooting performance at the start of the game by sinking seven of their next 12 shots from the floor. Fullerton was able to build a 12-point lead with just over two minutes to go in the first half and the Titans led the `Runners, 36-25, at halftime.

CSUB made one more field goal in the first half than its host, but the Titans sank 7-of-11 from three-point range. Sophomore guard David Walker led all `Runners with seven points while fellow guard Kaleb Higgins chipped in four points, two assists, and two rebounds.

Fullerton continued rolling into the second half and used a 22-7 run to open a 58-35 lead over Bakersfield about halfway through the period. The Titans' biggest lead of the game was 24 points, 69-45, with 6:40 left on the clock. CSUB made a late surge, but it was too late as Cal State Fullerton held on for a 75-61 victory.

Walker, who transferred to CSUB from South Alabama, led all `Runners with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Bakersfield equaled Fullerton in rebounding effort (35-35), but the Titans hit 12-of-22 three-pointers in the game compared to just 2-of-13 for the `Runners.

CSUB (6-11, 1-6 Big West) will return to Bakersfield for a pair of home games next week before heading back out for four more road contests. On Thursday, Feb. 10, CSUB will welcome UC Santa Barbara to the Icardo Center before hosting CSUN on Saturday, Feb. 12. Tickets for CSUB's home games are available ahead of time at GoRunners.com/tickets.
