Castillo, Defense Lead CSUB to Shutout, 2-1 Series Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – What better way for the CSU Bakersfield softball team to return to the Roadrunner Softball Complex than taking a 2-1 series victory over Pacific!? The visiting Tigers evened the series with a 7-1 victory in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader, but the `Runners responded for a 5-0 shutout to clinch the series on Sunday afternoon.

Bakersfield jumped out to the 5-0 lead in just the second inning of the rubber match and the `Runners held on for the win thanks to the stellar work of CSUB's freshmen battery, pitcher Reina Castillo and catcher Maya Molina-Villareal.

"Even in the first game, I felt like we could come back," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Head Coach of the `Runners. "I thought we were just swinging a little too big and we were pressing on offense today. We came out and jumped out in Game 2…I think we played really well defensively in both games. That's what we're going to keep hanging our hat on and offense is going to come."

Buck-Ziegler also commented on her young battery and the success they had on Sunday: "I thought Reina did a fantastic job. She moved the ball around well and she mixed her pitches well. We saw a weakness in [Pacific] and we kept pounding their weakness. Our defense had some phenomenal plays out there, too."

CSUB 1, Pacific 7

The Tigers jumped out to a quick, 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run leading the way. Bakersfield notched its only run of the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Curran.

Pacific added on two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings on its way to the 7-1 victory. Vanessa Strong pitched a complete game victory for the Tigers while Curran's two hits were not enough to ignite the CSUB offense.

CSUB 5, Pacific 0
Flipping the script, Bakersfield jumped on top of Pacific early in Game 2 of the doubleheader, scoring two runs in the first and three in the second. Curran and leftfielder Kaia Johnson both scored in the second inning on a defensive miscue by the Tigers. The next inning, Curran tallied her second triple of the day, driving in a pair of runs and making the score 4-0. Curran later scored on another error that gave CSUB the 5-0 lead it would need.

Castillo pitched a gem for the `Runners on the way to earning her first collegiate shutout. The native of Rialto, Calif. allowed just four hits and zero walks while striking out a pair of Tigers in the process.

Offensively, CSUB once again looked to Curran for another 2-for-3 performance. On the weekend, the sixth-year senior went 7-for-9 from the plate with three triples, four runs, and four RBI. Johnson was steady at the plate once again and, for the second-straight weekend, is Bakersfield's batting average leader at .438.

Next Up

Wrapping up its first two weeks with a 2-6 record, the CSUB softball team will take the momentum gained by this weekend's series win as well as the lessons learned from eight competitive games into a period without contests. The `Runners will hone their skills and practice from now until Mar. 11 when CSUB will return to action at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, Mar. 11-12, hosted by perennial softball power UCLA.
