Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Austin's Career Night Not Enough Against UCR

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball could not overcome a low second quarter scoring effort, playing catch up with not enough time in the end falling to UC Riverside, 57-46, Thursday night.

The Roadrunners rallied with UCR late into the fourth behind 20 second half points from Vanessa Austin, who finished with a career-high 24 points and became the 5th `Runner to tally 1,000 career points and 500 rebounds.Austin led the way for all scorers while she and Jayden Eggleston matched a team-high nine rebounds. Eggleston and Andie Easley each finished with six points and three assists against the Highlanders.

Bakersfield came out swinging in the second half of the first quarter. Up 5-3, the Roadrunners held UCR to two points in the last five minutes of the period while building their own eight-point lead, 11-5. Austin was 2-of-3 and leading CSUB with four points at the end of the period.

A 7-0 run by the Highlanders to start the second quarter brought the game within one quickly. Eggleston stopped the CSUB drought momentarily giving the `Runners a, 15-12, lead midway through the period. It would be the only made basket of the quarter for the team as UCR built their own eight-point lead at halftime, 24-16. Both Eggleston and Austin had four points to lead the team in scoring.

UC Riverside added more fuel to their fire in the first few minutes of the third going on a 6-0 run to take a, 30-16, lead, and force head coach Greg McCall to call a timeout and regroup. The Roadrunners would rally behind a 12-1 run down, 31-28, with three and a half minutes in the third quarter. Austin surpassed 1,000 career points during this run. Bakersfield would outscore the Highlanders by five in the third and find themselves down three headed into the final period.

Midway through the fourth quarter UCR led by four points, 45-41. The scoring gap would stay at five between the two teams in the fours minute down, 50-45, with 3:30 left and, 52-47, with one minute. The Highlanders would add four-point points in the last 60 seconds for the final result, 56-47.
