`Runners Push UNLV to 7th Inning to Wrap Day 2

LAS VEGAS – With two games against tough teams already under their belts, the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners returned to Eller Media Stadium on Saturday for a pair of rematches. This time around, the `Runners fared better than the day before, most notably in CSUB's second game against Rebel Kickoff host UNLV.

CSUB dropped an 11-2, five-inning game against BYU in the morning contest and Bakersfield was on the verge of suffering a similar fate in the matinee game against UNLV. Down to the team's final three outs in the fifth inning, CSUB surged and pushed the now 4-0 Rebels all the way into the seventh inning.

"I liked the way the team fought to the end today," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Head Coach of the `Runners. "We need to do a better job offensively. We are better than we have shown, but the team is buying into one another and we are making great strides."

CSUB 2, BYU 11 (5 inn.)

For the second-straight day, Bakersfield jumped out aggressively against BYU, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The `Runners used great small ball that included a sequence with a single, back-to-back walks, and then an RBI single from Maya Williams. BYU answered right back in the top of the second, loading the bases before tacking on six runs.

Williams delivered again for Bakersfield, driving in her fourth RBI of the weekend in the bottom of the third. In the next half inning, BYU scored a run on a sacrifice fly and then added three more runs to make the score 10-2. The Cougars tacked on one final run in the top of the fifth on the way to closing out the 11-2 victory.

CSUB 3, UNLV 9

UNLV sprinted ahead of the `Runners, using a triple and a home run to gain a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Rebels threatened to score again in the second inning, putting runners on the corners with two outs, but CSUB starting pitcher Kirsten Martinez induced a fly ball to end the threat.

In the bottom of the third inning, UNLV put two more runs up on the scoreboard on the back of a two-run double. The next inning, a pair of Rebel home runs put the home squad up 9-0 and in prime position to finish off the `Runners in five innings.

Down to its final three outs, Bakersfield battled back to force the Rebels to keep playing. CSUB first baseman Lauren Randle delivered on a clutch RBI single to left field, making the score 9-1. With the bases loaded and two outs, a UNLV wild pitch opened the door for pinch runner Maya Molina-Villareal to slide into home and send the game to the sixth inning.

Bakersfield added another run to the scoreboard in the top of the sixth on Samantha Pech's solo home run. Despite putting a `Runner in scoring position in the seventh, CSUB could not keep the rally going and fell by the 9-3 final score.

Pitching in relief for CSUB, freshman Kaycie Kennedy threw three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out two Rebels.

Tomorrow

CSUB (0-4) will return to Eller Media Stadium on Sunday for one final game at the Rebel Kickoff. The `Runners will close out Opening Weekend with a non-conference contest against Hawai'i scheduled for a 9 a.m. first pitch.
