Williams is Super, but CSUB Falls to Hawai'i 7-5

LAS VEGAS – The CSU Bakersfield softball team found itself in a non-conference battle against fellow Big West member Hawai'i on Sunday morning. Closing out the Rebel Kickoff with their best game of the young season, the Roadrunners came up just short in a 7-5 loss against the Rainbow Wahine.

"True teams have to bounce back from adversity," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Bakersfield's Head Coach. "These young women are gelling together. Our pitchers grew up two-fold over the weekend."

While several CSUB student-athletes put together solid showings in Las Vegas, the standout `Runner performance of the weekend went to Maya Williams. A junior college transfer from College of Southern Idaho, Williams hit .400 over the five-game tournament while slugging .800. She led CSUB with seven RBI this week and made nine defensive plays without a single error.

"Maya Williams has grit and heart," Buck-Ziegler said of her third baseman. "She is a great leader for us. She has matured so much over the past five months."

In the top of the second, Hawai'i put runners on the corners with one out. CSUB leftfielder Kaia Johnson chased a line drive to the foul line and made a spectacular diving catch. While UH was able to take a 1-0 lead on the sacrifice fly, Johnson ended the inning with a double play by throwing out a runner trying to advance to second.

The Rainbow Wahine extended their lead in the top of the third thanks to a pair of unearned runs. Bakersfield answered back in the bottom half of the inning when designated player Samantha Pech delivered an RBI single, making the score 3-1.

After a scoreless fourth, both teams team tacked on three runs in their respective halves of the fifth inning. In the CSUB half, Samantha Martinez doubled and then scored after two wild pitches. Williams then drove in a pair of runs with a double of her own, pulling the `Runners within two runs at 6-4.

Hawai'i tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh off a solo home run, but Bakersfield would not go down without a fight. Williams smacked her first home run as a `Runner over the left field wall, but CSUB would not close the gap any further, falling by the 7-5 final score.

CSUB (0-5) will return from Las Vegas and begin preparations for its first home games in over 1,000 days. The `Runners will welcome Pacific, Feb. 14-15, to the Roadrunner Softball Complex for a three-game series. CSUB softball season tickets and single-game tickets are available ahead of time at GoRunners.com/Tickets.
