CSUB Softball Plays First Games in Over 700 Days

LAS VEGAS – Shaking off the rust built up during nearly a two-year gap without competition, the CSU Bakersfield softball team opened the 2022 season with a pair of games at UNLV's Rebel Kickoff on Friday. The Roadrunners battled, but they dropped a pair of five-inning games against BYU and host UNLV.

"Even though it might not look like it on the scoreboard, I think this is the best team we have ever had," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Bakersfield's 11th-year Head Coach. "In terms of pitching, we need to do a better job than we did today. Defensively, we definitely did not show what we're capable of. I know that the runs will come."

All three of Bakersfield's pitchers saw time in the circle on Friday with each making their `Runner debut. Reina Castillo was the most effective CSUB pitcher on the day, throwing 5.2 innings over two appearances while striking out three Rebels in her start against UNLV.

Offensively, Bakersfield got a hit in each game out of sixth-year `Runner Cydney Curran. Third basemen Maya Williams and Shaylene Fuimaono each tallied two-RBI singles in Bakersfield's season opener against BYU. Junior Samantha Martinez did not find a hit on Friday, but the second baseman reached based twice on walks.

"I'm really excited to be back on the field for my last year," Curran said after Friday's games. "It's been a long time coming and I'm grateful to still have this opportunity. We just need to play our game and play together. Despite the outcomes of the first two games, I'm hoping we just come out confident for the rest of the weekend and play like we know how to play."

CSUB 4, BYU 13 (5 inn.)

Bakersfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead on BYU in the top of the first inning. CSUB loaded the bases with two outs and Williams flared a single to left center that scored the pair of `Runners. The Cougars answered back in the bottom half of the frame, plating a run on an RBI single before adding three unearned runs thanks to a CSUB error. BYU took a 4-2 lead into the second inning.

A three-run home run in the bottom of the second extended the Cougars' advantage to 7-2. BYU threatened to add on more runs, but Williams' inning-ending double play shut the door. CSUB would go on to tally three double plays in the game.

BYU exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 13-2. Down to their final three outs in the fifth inning, CSUB rallied to score two more with Fuimaono driving in a pair of `Runners with a single. Bakersfield's push ended there, as did the game, with a final score of 13-4.

CSUB 0, UNLV 8 (5 inn.)

UNLV loaded the bases in the bottom of the second and took a 1-0 lead on an RBI walk. In the third inning, the Rebels tacked on four more runs thanks to good small ball play. The host team then took an 8-0 advantage in the fourth on a three-run blast.

In the top of the fifth inning, CSUB rallied with two outs, but fell 60 feet short. Savanna Montoya drew a walk and ended up on third after a single from Curran. Unable to score a run and extend the game, CSUB fell by the 8-0 final score.

Montoya finished the game with a base hit and a walk out of the leadoff spot for Bakersfield.

Tomorrow

CSUB (0-2) will return to Eller Media Stadium on Saturday for a pair of rematches. The `Runners will once against face BYU at 9 a.m. (PT) before closing out the day against UNLV at 2 p.m. CSUB will also play one final game on Sunday, a non-conference contest against Hawai'i scheduled for a 9 a.m. first pitch.
