Gauchos Withstand `Runners on the Road, 59-47

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball struggled to make shots in critical moments of a physical contest at UC Santa Barbara Thursday evening. The Roadrunners would tally a 12-point, 59-47, loss against the Gauchos and fall 1-6 in Big West action.

Vanessa Austin led Bakersfield with 12 points and 6 rebounds and was near perfect in field goal attempts going 5-of-6 from the field. For the first time this season, Jayden Eggleston was held under double digits finishing with nine points and six rebounds on the night.

UCSB led 7-5 midway through the first quarter, although the Roadrunners had held their own two-point lead briefly. A 10-0 run for the Gauchos over a 2:30 stretch gave them a 13-5 lead. CSUB had a four-minute lull without scoring before a three-pointer from Tatyanna Clayburne made it, 13-8. Bakersfield would claw back down, 16-12, at the end of the first. Vanessa Austin led the Roadrunners in scoring with four points.

It was a 10-point, 26-16, contest with under five minutes left on the game clock in the first half. CSUB scored just seven points in the second quarter to find themselves down 15 points at halftime, 34-19. Jayden Eggleston and Austin each had a team-best four points.

The Gauchos led 39-28 with half of the third quarter expired after a made three from Andie Easley at the top of the arch. UCSB led by as much as 18 points in the period but would go into the final stretch with a 15-point edge leading, 45-30.

Midway through the fourth quarter CSUB trailed 18 points, 53-35 – tied largest lead in the contest. In the final five minutes of the game Bakersfield used a scramble full court press to try and slow the Gauchos down but struggled to cut the scoring gap until the last 90 seconds of the period. CSUB closed the quarter on an 8-2 run; however, UC Santa Barbara would walk away with the win, 59-47.
