Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Written by James Tsitakis-Cecil

Johnson's Career Night Is Unable to Counter Pepperdine

Malibu, Calif. – Following the thrilling overtime home victory last time out, the `Runners began another three-game road trip with a game on the coast against Pepperdine. CSUB was bested by a sharp shooting Waves offense that used a strong third quarter to get far enough ahead that the `Runners could not find a way back into the game. Despite the loss, Simone Johnson posted a career night and her first double-double.

Notables
  • The `Runners began the game competitively against Pepperdine, scoring on a relatively even level through the first half, but the Waves' offense exploded in the third quarter and never slowed down despite the `Runners trying their hardest to stay in the game.
  • Foul trouble from CSUB allowed Pepperdine to gain 22 points on 35 free throw attempts, which added to an already dangerous offense for the Waves.
  • Bakersfield sophomore Simone Johnson managed to post career highs in points and rebounds despite the large loss.
  • The `Runners have not been able to string together back-to-back wins yet this season.

First Half
  • Bakersfield and Pepperdine both started the half firing on all cylinders, trading lead changes back-and-forth up to the first media timeout. At that point, the `Runners led 9-8, sparked by Sophia Tougas' continued run in the top-10 of the NCAA for three-point percentage.
  • The Waves surged back into the game and took the lead on the back of a 14-4 run that took them into the second quarter before CSUB could start answering consistently.
  • Towards the end of the first half, the `Runners went on a small run of their own to cut away at the deficit, finishing the half only trailing Pepperdine 32-24.
Second Half
  • The second half started off on a slower pace than the previous quarter had ended with. Both CSUB and Pepperdine began trading blows steadily and evenly with the distance between the two teams staying between 8-10 points for some time.
  • Pepperdine took the third quarter handedly, and led 59-36 entering the fourth quarter, the largest lead of the game up to that point.
  • CSUB began to climb back into the game on the back of Julia Riley's first downtown basket of the season, and chipped away at the deficit to be down 65-47 halfway through the final quarter.
  • The Waves never quite looked back after continuing their large second half run. Pepperdine took the game in hand despite a valiant effort from CSUB to get back into the game multiple times.
