CSUB Unable to Halt Hornets Offense in Sacramento

Sacramento, Calif. – In the second of three straight road games for CSUB, the `Runners were bested 67-46 by a hot Sacramento State offense. It was quite a rocky start for CSUB, as Sacramento State took both of the first quarters handedly, leading by sixteen at the half. Despite this, CSUB never gave up or turned over, fighting back for strong third and fourth quarters that saw even-paced scoring. However, in the end, CSUB could not quite find a way to completely turn the tide despite season-high nights from Grace Hunter and Soli Herrera.

Notables
  • The Roadrunners put forth a strong effort to keep the turnovers and fouls down compared to the last few games, but Sacramento State's primary scorers were tough to keep off the board, as Isnelle Natabou already had a double-double after the first half.
  • As the second half began, the `Runners settled down and played a more consistent, calm game, letting Sacramento State commit fouls as CSUB focused on its shooting. Despite the resurgence by the `Runners, the Hornets took their largest lead of the game towards the end of the third quarter.
  • Grace Hunter was a definitive bright spot for an otherwise inconsistent CSUB offense, posting a season-high 12 points and 5 rebounds. Soli Herrera also shot a season-high 8 points.
  • After CSUB began to close the gap, Sacramento State upped the ante and finished the game winning the third and fourth quarters both by narrow margins.
  • All things considered, the `Runners played the Hornets statistically close in most categories, but the difference came in Sacramento State's ability to snag rebounds and convert shots from the field with greater efficiency.

First Half
  • The `Runners started off inconsistent, shooting just 36% from the field in the first quarter. Despite this, CSUB was still able to strike at a relatively even pace with the Hornets, taking advantage of their turnovers. The first quarter ended 20-14 in favor of Sacramento State.
  • The Hornets used the glass to control the game, working hard in the rebound game to the tune of 26-11 in Sacramento State's favor. The Hornets' Isnelle Natabou was an integral part of that, posting a double-double in the first half alone.
  • The `Runners were able to limit the turnovers and fouls, letting the Hornets take the lead with those, which is what gave CSUB some hope going into the second half.
Second Half
  • Foul trouble came back for the `Runners, as they had already put the Hornets in the bonus midway through the third quarter.
  • Despite all of the fouls, the `Runners were able to keep Sacramento State off the board for nearly four minutes in the third quarter, as CSUB crawled back into the game trailing by 15 at the final timeout of the third quarter.
  • The Hornets were committing fouls on an even footing with CSUB, giving the `Runners a lane to squeak back into the game a bit. A 18-16 third quarter in favor of the Hornets was the closest that the game had been up to that point.
  • After an early fourth quarter timeout by Sacramento State, the Hornets seemed to regroup and get back to their first half pace, taking the final quarter 14-11. Sacramento State finished the game with three double-digit scorers as CSUB could never quite find a way to slow down the Hornets' physical offense.
