Career Game from Morgan Edwards Can't Hold Off UCLA

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield's valiant effort was not quite enough to hold off one of the hottest teams in the country, as no. 10 UCLA bested the Roadrunners 75-47 on a sunny California afternoon. While the Bruins may have taken the game handedly, Bakersfield held them to just 28% on three-pointers while providing two leading scorers in the game. The `Runners will be back at home for one final non-conference game against Pacific, as CSUB looks to respond to this road trip with a win before Big West play opens up.

Notables
  • Return of the Schaik: Although not a starter, Hennie van Schaik was back on the court in a limited capacity for the first time since mid-November as she has been nursing a lower-body injury.
  • While UCLA may have defended its home court, CSUB provided a true test to one of the country's best offenses, limiting the Bruins perimeter shooting. However, UCLA's win was propelled by balanced play from throughout its lineup, as every available player was on the scoreboard before the first half ended.
  • Freshman guard Morgan Edwards had a game to remember, putting up a career-high 13 points including her first three-pointer while shooting 5-of-11 from the field in 30 minutes of play.
  • Backups proved key for the 'Runners today with Edwards and Grace Hunter both providing game-leading point totals, as CSUB's bench outscored its starting lineup 30-17.

First Half
  • UCLA surged ahead early as the `Runners found themselves in foul trouble just halfway through the first quarter and put the Bruins into the bonus by the two-minute mark.
  • Despite a large run that put UCLA up 22-8, CSUB did not turn over, responding with a massive resurgence that saw the `Runners down just 24-16.
  • The Bruins responded with another run of their own, shoring up their defense to keep CSUB off the scoreboard for four minutes while going up 35-16 near the end of the half.
  • Despite the UCLA resurgence, the `Runners showed the potential they have against this strong team, losing the second quarter just 15-12 while holding the Bruins to a meager 21.4% on three-pointers through the half.
Second Half
  • CSUB came out of the half putting the first four points on the board before UCLA regained its footing, beginning a small run to lengthen the score gap again.
  • The Bruins ran off with the score in the waning minutes of the third quarter, lapping the `Runners 54-27 by the fourth and final quarter.
  • The `Runners could not find a way back into the game after UCLA answered their large run back in the first half. The Bruins would continue to pile on points to win 75-47 in spite of CSUB never halting its attempt at a comeback.
