LOS ANGELES – A slow start gave way to a large, early deficit for Cal State Bakersfield in the women's basketball team's road contest at USC on Tuesday evening. Despite a standout performance from sophomore Hennie van Schaik, the Roadrunners fell in their season-opening game against the Trojans, 86-41, in the Galen Center.

Notables

A sophomore from The Netherlands, van Schaik is coming off a Big West All-Freshman Team performance last season. She led CSUB with 11 points and six rebounds in just 20 minutes against USC on Tuesday.
Sophomore guard Tatyanna Clayburne turned it on late to the tune of nine points and four assists off the bench.
Bakersfield trailed 46-14 at the half, but played much better in the final 20 minutes. The second-half score was 40-27 despite the Trojans keeping their foot on the gas pedal.
CSUB's defense forced 18 USC turnovers on the evening.

Bakersfield's offense stuttered in the first quarter with the team's first points coming over nine minutes into the period.
USC led 26-4 after the first ten minutes and then continued on to a 46-14 halftime advantage.
The silver lining of the first half for Bakersfield was that `Runner defense forced 11 USC turnovers.
