Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Huge Third Quarter Helps `Runners Down Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. – A huge third quarter and career-high performances from a pair of sophomores pushed the Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team past Fresno State on Friday night. The Roadrunners outscored their cross-valley rival Bulldogs 28-11 in the third period and held on for a 56-53 victory in the Save Mart Center.

Notables
  • Sophomore Hennie van Schaik tallied a career-high 17 points to go with six rebounds in Fresno.
  • Point guard Tatyanna Clayburne posted career-highs of six assists and seven rebounds in the `Runner victory.
  • Junior transfer Shaunae Brown scored all 12 of her points in the third quarter, single-handedly outscoring the Bulldogs in the period.
  • CSUB hit 9-of-23 (.391) three-pointers while stifling the Fresno State attempts from behind the arc (3-of-25, .120).
Quotes from Head Coach Greg McCall.
  • "Their press gave us some problems in the first half. We turned it over and allowed it to bother us. We made the adjustment in the second half and we broke it open and got some shots. Once you see ball go through the net, it becomes contagious. That was the difference from the first half to the second half."
  • "I told Shaunae not to worry because her shots weren't falling [in the first half]. I told her 'just keep shooting it.' We broke the press and got ourselves in better control. We were able to find her and Sophia Tougas for big big shots."
  • "We got so excited and gave up the lead because we started going backwards in the fourth. It was a team effort of us trying to hold tight and keep the lead. We just tried to continue to contest shots without fouling. It was a great team effort down the stretch."
  • "This is a huge Valley rivalry and it feels good to be back in control of the Valley."
