BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Battling against The Big West's second-place UC Santa Barbara, the Cal State Bakersfield volleyball team dropped a tight three-set match on its home floor Friday night. The Roadrunners pushed the Gauchos to the brink in two of the match's three sets, but the visiting team eked out a narrow victory.

"I thought we definitely got better from how we played last weekend to this match. I thought we were grinding tonight."
"When we do a good job with our serve and pass, we're a good team. When we don't and we break it down, that's when we get in trouble a little bit more."
On facing CSUN tomorrow: "Every game right now, anybody in this conference can beat anybody. CSUN was just in a five-set match with Irvine. I know tomorrow, I have zero doubts it's going to be a dog fight."

Notables

Sophomore Ava Palm led the `Runners with 11 kills while adding five digs.
UCSB's Michelle Ohwobete countered that with a match-high 12 kills as well as 10 digs.
CSUB libero Paige Calvin posted a match-best 15 digs on the night.
Bakersfield went toe-to-toe with the Gauchos in hitting percentage, posting a clip of .196 compared to .200.

Set 1 (UCSB, 25-23)

An extremely close opening set featured 10 tied scores, including 22-22.
UCSB earned two set-point opportunities, and while the `Runners staved off one, the Gauchos closed out the narrow victory.
Palm led Bakersfield with four kills in the opening set.

Set 2 (UCSB, 25-17)

UCSB slowly creeped ahead to an 18-12 advantage.
The Gauchos closed the second set on a 6-2 run to seal the deal.
After hitting .393 in the first game, CSUB hit just .026 in the second.

Set 3 (UCSB, 26-24)

Bakersfield used an early, 7-1 run to go ahead of UCSB, 10-4.
A 13-3 run by the Gauchos pushed the visitors ahead 21-17.
CSUB fended off four-straight match point opportunities, but an overturned challenge ended the match with the Gauchos taking the final rally and another two-point win.
Freshman Naomi Chankoumi was a spark plug off the bench with three kills on five swings with no errors in the third set.
