Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

'Runner Comeback Thwarted by UC San Diego

Bakersfield - UC San Diego scored in the 87th minute to steal three points from a valiant California State University, Bakersfield side with a 2-1 victory, Saturday night at The Main Soccer Field, in front of an announced crowd of 342. The Roadrunners were forced to play down a man for the final 52 minutes of the game, but carried the play in the second half and appeared destined for a hard-earned point before the Triton's backbreaking tally.

Bryson Hankins was sent off late in the first half, when his throw in toward Andres Perez De Gracia hit a UC San Diego defender running into the ball path. The decision seemed to galvanize the 'Runners who dominated possession in the second 45 and equalized in the 83rd minute.

"From the moment we suffered the red card we played better football and looked well worth the tying goal," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "At that point we were a bit fatigued, but in terms of the lads' regrouping at halftime, having a plan and sticking to it, I was really pleased and encouraged. We'll have to go again on Wednesday."

First Half...
* UCSD's Andrew Valverde opened the scoring in the 19th minute when his cross snuck through everyone, including teammate Nick Cirrito and into the far corner of the Bakersfield goal.
* Bryson Hankins drew the 'Runners first red card of the year in the 38th minute. Goalkeeper Filippo Dadone was also booked on the play, earning a yellow for dissent.
* The Tritons out shot CSUB 7-3 in the first half, and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Second Half...
* Bakersfield's Rene Cortez was a thorn in the side of the Triton defense all night long. He finally cashed in off of a Carlos Armendariz corner kick, pulling the Roadrunners even in the 83rd minute.
* The 'Runners lost track of UCSD forward Nick Cirrito four minutes later. Cirrito took a cross from Andrew Valverde and knocked a clean header inside the back post for the game-winning goal.

Notable...
* Rene Cortez' goal was his second of the season, tying him for the team lead with Carlos Armendariz. The duo also share the team lead with five total points scored this season.
* Bryson Hankins red card was Bakersfield's first of the season. Hankins also earned the team's lone red during the 2021 campaign.
* The two teams combined for nine total cards. CSUB drew three yellows and one red, while UC San Diego was cautioned five times.
* Goalkeeper Filippo Dadone made four saves and faced six shots on goal.
