Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Stefansson Scores; Bakersfield Downed in Davis

Davis – Freshman forward Atli Stefansson scored his first career goal to have the California State University, Bakersfield deficit, but host UC Davis held on for a 2-1 Big West Conference victory, Wednesday afternoon at the Aggie Soccer Field. Davis' Emmanuel Doherty scored a pair of goals to lead the home team to its third-straight victory, while the Roadrunners fell to 0-4-1 in league play.

"We worked hard in the second half and nearly got back to two all," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "Collectively, we are disappointed with our first half performance and it is important we learn from the experience. We have a big opportunity at home on Saturday to put this weekend right."

First Half…

* Emmanuel Doherty scored his first goal of the half in the 36th minute, giving UC Davis a 1-0 lead after an extended run of possession in the CSUB end of the field.
* Doherty struck again just nine minutes later, doubling the Aggie lead after taking a pass from teammate Andrew Dutra.
* Davis carried play for much of the first half, outshooting Bakersfield 12-1 and holding a 5-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Second Half…
* Atli Stefansson got the Roadrunners right back into the game when he finished off a scoring play early in the second half, cutting the UCD lead to 2-1 in the 52nd minute.
* The Roadrunners were much better in the final 45 minutes of play, outshooting the Aggies 8-6, and earning three corners to UC Davis' five. Each team registered two shots on goal in the frame.
* The two schools combined for four second half cautions.

Notable…
* Atli Stefansson became the fourth Roadrunner to net his first career goal during the 2022 season, joining Shammai Camara, Jacob Fitzgerald and Andres Perez De Gracia.
* Freshman goalkeeper Damian Alguera made his second career appearance, playing the final 45 minutes for Bakersfield and making the first two saves of his career.
* The Roadrunners were playing without defensive stalwarts Harry Downing and Bryson Hankins. Downing due to yellow card accumulation, and Hankins as a result of a questionable red card in last Saturday's contest with UC San Diego.
* The Aggies inched ahead in the all-time series history between the two schools with their 12th win over CSUB. They now lead the all-time match up by a 12-11-3 margin.

Up Next…
