`Runners Cruise to Victory in First Dual of Season

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – In their first dual meet of the season, the Cal State Bakersfield men's and women's swimming and diving teams dominated Pomona-Pitzer at the Hillman Aquatic Center on Saturday. The Roadrunner women toppled the Sagehens, 204-84, while the Bakersfield men ran away with a 200-99 victory.

Quotes from Director of Swimming Chris Hansen
  • "This is probably the best we have looked as a team since prior to COVID. We had some good individual results at the Invite last weekend, but we haven't really all come together and had a dynamite swim from everybody in a very long time."
  • "Our top swimmers were obviously good again today, but people like Danica Aguilar swimming faster than she did at Conference last year, Jessica Franco swimming faster than she ever did last year, there's a maturity that's happening that's kind of nice to see."
  • "Everyone on the team is vying for a trip to the Princeton Invitational. We'll be swimming some top schools there, so there's a hunger where everyone wants to get on that airplane and it's kind of nice."
Women
  • Mikayla Popham dominated on her way to three individual victories in the 200 free, 100 free, and 200 IM. She also helped the 200 medley relay team to a win.
  • Lorena Jerebic won the 100 and 200 fly double while helping both the 200 medley and 400 free relay teams to victory.
  • Chelaine Van der Westhuizen also picked up a relay win while placing first in the 100 and 200 breast events.
  • Kylie Ney won the 1000 free before placing second in the 500 free.
  • Hansen commended the efforts of Hannah Marsh, who took second in the 1000 free then was in the pool again ten minutes later and took third in the 200 free.
  • Aguilar (200 back) and Franco (100 back and 500 free) both added to the CSUB win column as well.
Men
  • Vili Sivec did not lose a race on Saturday, claiming individual wins in the 100 and 200 fly while also helping both `Runner relay teams to victory.
  • Arthur Schneider won the 1000 free, then was back in the water less than five minutes later, placing third in the 200 free. The freshman also went on to wins in the 500 free and the 400 free relay.
  • Yigit Saglam won the 100 back and finished runner-up in the 100 fly and 100 free along with a relay win.
  • Dyson Modica took away two wins in the diving events, eclipsing 300 points on both boards.
