`Runners Drop 5-Set Thriller to Cal Poly

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Without exaggeration, Tuesday night's Big West volleyball match between Cal State Bakersfield and Cal Poly was some of the highest-caliber competition the Icardo Center has seen in recent memory. The host Roadrunners went toe-to-toe with one of the league's top teams on the blue Valley Strong Court and the only disappointing part of the match was that it had to end.

Cal Poly (9-8, 6-1 Big West) came back from a 2-1 deficit and outlasted CSUB (5-14, 2-5 Big West), sealing the match with a 15-13 win in the fifth and final set.

Quotes from Head Coach Giovana Melo
  • "Obviously, Cal Poly is a very good volleyball team and I can't take anything away from them, but I thought our team played an unbelievable match."
  • "I thought that we served really well. We got them out of system a lot and were able to slow them down…There were moments I thought it was more about us, we didn't execute the way we needed to obviously win the match, but I was very proud of the way the team performed."
  • "In the fifth set, we had the momentum to start, but then we made a couple of errors that were unforced. We got the momentum back at the end, but it wasn't enough."
  • "I told Hayley in the locker room, I know her mom was watching tonight and I'm sure she's very proud of her." Before the match, CSUB dedicated Tuesday night's match to Hayley McCluskey's mother, Linda McCluskey, who passed away from brain cancer this past Summer.
