Roadrunners Fourth Quarter Rally Comes Up Short

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball came up short eight points in its Big West home opener on Thursday night against UC Irvine. The Roadrunners rallied in the second half to cut into a double figure deficit, but time would run out giving the Anteaters the win, 81-73.

Bakersfield had three players score double digits behind Jayden Eggleston's 19 points. Andie Easley and Miracle Saxon joined her with 17 and 16, respectively. Eggleston, Saxon, and Lexus Green paced the `Runners on the glass each grabbing a team-best five rebounds on the night.

Back-to-back threes from UC Irvine gave the Anteaters a 7-2 lead in the first three minutes of the first quarter. UCI regained its five-point lead, 11-6, with 5:03 left in the period. CSUB brought the game within five for a third time, 19-14, with 1:39 left in the first. Both teams would score once more in the last 60 seconds for the 5-point, 16-21, first quarter score.

CSUB didn't score a basket until five minutes into the second period with a three heaved from Green near half court as the shot clock wound down. At that point in the game, it was 30-19 – UCI. Bakersfield brought the game within nine, 25-34, in the last two minutes after being down by as much as 14 points in the quarter. A last second shot as time expired in the half gave the Anteaters an 11-point, 38-27, lead.

The Anteaters had built a comfortable 49-32 lead just ahead of the midway mark in the third quarter. A three-point play from Hennie van Schaik followed by a fast break layup from Eggleston made it 37-49 with 4:57, which prompted a timeout from UC Irvine. However, the visitors would close the period outscoring the `Runners 15-11 to lead 64-48 going into the final period.

Bakersfield added 13 points in the first five and a half minutes of the fourth quarter but still found themselves down, 60-78. Five straight points from Eggleston brought the game within 10 points, 78-68, with 3:30 left in the game. CSUB would hold UCI to just three points in the final stretch of the contest and outscore the Anteaters 25-17 but fall in the end, 81-73.

Up next, CSU Bakersfield (1-11, 0-3 Big West) welcomes UC San Diego (8-8, 5-2 Big West) on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip in the Icardo Center. The Tritons defeated Cal Poly 69-58 on Thursday evening.
