Late 3rd Quarter Run Lifts Hawai'i over CSUB

HONOLULU – Fanatic defense to start the first quarter set the tempo for CSU Bakersfield women's basketball Saturday night against Hawai'i. Unable to hold on to their lead late in the third, however, the Rainbow Wahine would steal the Big West Conference win, 73-66.

Bakersfield had a pair finish in double figures behind redshirt junior Jayden Eggleston's 15 points. Freshman Hennie van Schaik added 10 points on 50% shooting from three and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in the contest.

CSUB led 7-5 midway through the period. Bakersfield used a 5-0 run to build a four-point lead before a UH triple quenched a drought and brought the game within one, 9-8. Andie Easley came in and scored the last four for CSUB taking a 13-12 lead at the end of the period.

Behind a pair of threes from Hennie van Schaik, the `Runners extended their lead 24-18 at the half-way mark. A 10-0 run from the Rainbow Wahine gave the home team their second lead of the contest before a pair of free throws ended the run and put the Roadrunners back up. CSUB closed the period with a 5-2 run to lead over UH at halftime, 34-30.

The Roadrunners struggled in the first five minutes of the second half scoring just two points. Hawai tied the game at 40 points apiece with 3:32 left in the third quarter. The equalized at 46 with just over 90 seconds in the period. UH closed the third on a 5-1 run to take a lead, 51-47, into the final period.

Bakersfield found themselves down two points with 5:56 left in the fourth period before a pair of free throws from UH extended their lead, 58-54. The Rainbow Wahine stretched their lead to 10 points on a 6-0 run in the second half of the fourth quarter. UH was able to hold on to their lead despite a drive from the `Runners earning the win, 73-66.

CSUB women's basketball (1-10, 0-2) returns home opening a stretch of four games at home starting with UC Irvine on Thursday (1/27) and UC San Diego on Saturday (1/29).
