Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

`Runners Surge Past Cal Poly for First Big West Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After trailing visiting Big West Conference member Cal Poly for most of the first half, the CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team surged to halftime and kept the momentum rolling for a 73-60 victory in the Icardo Center.

"I continue to thank God that we are open for our fans to come and support us," said Rod Barnes, Head Coach of the Roadrunners. "I thought that was the difference in the game. When we were down, I thought the fans were encouraging us, we could feel it, to make a run and I thought our guys did that."

The `Runners enjoyed four double-digit scorers on the evening, including a season-high 16 points from fifth-year senior Shawn Stith. A forward from East Oakland, Calif., Stith finished the game with seven rebounds as well. Sophomore guard Kaleb Higgins exploded for 17 points off the bench while adding four steals against the Mustangs. Junior Travis Henson posted 11 points, including a show-stopping one-handed dunk that helped spark CSUB's first-half run.

Bakersfield dominated the glass and became just the seventh NCAA Division I team this season to hold its opponent to zero offensive rebounds in the game. CSUB's bench outscored Cal Poly's 36-6 Tuesday evening and the `Runners benefited from 14 second-chance points. Bakersfield also forced 21 Mustang turnovers while committing just 10 turnovers of its own.

Cal Poly shot lights out in the first half, converting on 73 percent of the team's field goal attempts. Despite the hot start by their opponent, the `Runners used a 9-0 run over the final three minutes of the period to go the locker room tied 30-30.

Bakersfield continued surging right into the second half, extending the run to 21-4 and taking a 42-34 lead over its visitors. CSUB slowly grew its lead through the final seconds of the contest, going ahead by as many as 15 points before sealing the 73-60 victory.

With the win, the `Runners improved to 1-2 in Big West play and 6-6 on the season. CSUB will have just one day to prepare for its next game as Hawai'i is on its ways to the mainland for a Thursday night clash in the Icardo Center. Tipoff for the Jan. 20 game is once again schedule for 7 p.m. (PT).
