McCall's 22 Points Not Enough for CSUB Against Hawai'i

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A fierce battle raged between Big West Conference foes CSU Bakersfield and Hawai'i Thursday night inside of the Icardo Center. Despite tying the score multiple times down the stretch, the host Roadrunners could not regain the lead as the Rainbow Warriors picked up a 63-59 road victory.

"You have to give a lot of credit to Hawai'i," said Rod Barnes, Bakersfield's 11th-year Head Coach. "They have a really talented, experienced basketball team. I thought they came out and really played with a lot of confidence tonight. I'm extremely proud of our guys. This was our third game in six days with no practice, and to play a team of that caliber and give ourselves a chance to win, it's something to say for our team about their character."

On the evening, Bakersfield was led by a season-high performance from fifth-year senior Justin McCall, who tallied 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go with nine rebounds. CSUB (6-7, 1-3 BWC) went toe-to-toe with Hawai'i (8-5, 3-0 BWC), rivaling the visiting Bows in most statistical categories, but the `Runners fell short in the final minutes of the game.

CSUB fell behind 18-10 in the middle of the first half, but the `Runners used a 16-3 run to take the lead. Bakersfield went to the locker room with a 28-26 advantage at halftime behind McCall's game highs of eight points and six rebounds. The `Runners shot 42 percent from the field in the first half while holding the Bows to just 30 percent shooting.

Hawai'i jumped out to a 10-2 run at the start of the second half. The Bows maintained a small lead until Justin Edler-Davis drained a three with just over eight minutes left to put CSUB ahead 50-49. Hawai'i regained the lead a couple minutes later and the `Runners fought back to tie the score three times down the stretch, but CSUB could not find the go-ahead basket and eventually fell by the final score of 63-59.

Wrapping up a home stint, CSUB will head out on the road for four-straight games away from the Icardo Center. Next week, the `Runners are scheduled to face off against UC Irvine (Jan. 27) and UC San Diego in a pair of road games on ESPN+.
