Smith Earns First Win at Chippewa Challenge

Mount Pleasant, Mich. – CSU Bakersfield won all nine contested bouts to beat American 35-6, finishing the inaugural Chippewa Challenge with a 1-2 record and earning Head Coach Luke Smith his first career dual met victory. The Roadrunners dropped duals with host Central Michigan and Campbell earlier in the day.
 
Angelo Martinoni, Josh Brown, Jacob Hanson and Josh Loomer all won twice to lead the `Runners, with every CSUB wrestler earning at least one victory.
 
Martinoni opened the day with a narrow loss to #13 Dresden Simon of Central Michigan. Trailing 10-2 to start the third, the redshirt sophomore from Orangevale, Calif., scored six straight points to close to 10-8 before running out of time.
 
He bounced back with a pin of Campbell's Shannon Hanna and a dominating 17-0 technical fall victory over American's Ethan Szerencsits.
 
Brown won an overtime decision over CMU's Mason Breece, 11-5, when he turned a sudden victory takedown into an additional four nearfall points. He added a 7-5 decision over American's Patrick Ryan in the nightcap.
 
Loomer won a narrow 3-2 decision over Campbell's Levi Hopkins, before turning it on in the nightcap with a 17-0 dismantling of American's Carsten Rawls.
 
Hansen earned six team points with wins over CMU's Ben Cushman and American's Colin Shannon.
 
Smith, a former Chippewa All-American, earned his first career victory on the same mat he dominated for four-seasons as a collegiate athlete.

CSUB is now 1-6 in dual meets this season.

NOTABLE…
* Josh Brown's two wins give him 20 for the season. He's the first runner to reach 20 wins in 2021-22 and currently sports a 20-11 overall record.
* Angelo Martinoni, who saw a six-bout win streak in dual meets snapped at #8 Iowa State, started a new two-match streak with wins in his final two duals of the day.
* Jacob Sieder recorded his first pin of the season. The senior heavyweight led the `Runners in pins in each of the past two seasons with 6 and 2, respectively.
* Josh Loomer captured his first dual meet victory since Feb. 14, 2020, when he collected an 11-3 win over Cal Poly's Trent Tracy.
* All four Chippewa Challenge teams are coached by Central Michigan alums.
* Central Michigan slipped past Campbell in the final dual of the day to earn the tournament crown.
