Bakersfield Wins Big West Debut in Wild Affair at CSUN

Bakersfield, Calif. – Four different Roadrunners scored goals and freshman goalkeeper Scott Pengelly made a career-high six saves, as CSU Bakersfield bested CSUN, 4-3, on Wednesday night in Northridge, Calif. The `Runners overcame a pair of deficits to beat the Matadors for the first time in program history and win their Big West men's soccer debut.

"What a great start to our Big West journey," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "We opened the first half with such a great attitude and took our chances well. CSUN started the second half better than us and deserved the 3-2 lead, but I was really pleased with our grit and quality to finish our final two chances."

Bakersfield grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the second minute of the game on redshirt freshman Rene Cortez' first career goal, before CSUN scored twice in quick succession to take a 2-1 lead after 11 minutes.

Defender Eric Whelan scored to tie the game at two at the half, and midfielder Michael Vogel struck to tie the game at three goals apiece in the 73rd minute.

Aodhan O'Hara scored his fifth goal of the season, and his second game-winner in as many outings to clinch the come-from-behind victory for the `Runners.

Michael Arrington, Giovanni Aguilar and Arturo Reveles scored for CSUN.

CSUB senior Niklas Roessler collected an assist, his third of the season to lead the team. Vogel, Bryson Hankins and Hesron Barry also had helpers.

Of Pengelly's six stops, two came with CSUN nursing a one-goal lead late in the second half, keeping the `Runners in the game.

"We're delighted to come away with points, and now we understand the demands of playing in (the Big West)," Grant said.

Bakersfield plays for three in a row on Saturday, October 2nd at UC Riverside. The Highlanders entered the week with the top record in the Big West at 5-3-0 overall.

Scoring Summary:
02 | It took just two minutes for CSUB to score a Big West Conference goal. Hankins collected the ball in his own end, launching a long pass over the top springing Cortez, who finished just inside the right post for the first goal of his Bakersfield career.
08 | A CSUB clearing attempted ended up on the foot of Matador Michael Arrington, who stepped into a one-timer and labeled his shot into the upper right corner past a diving Pengelly.
11 | CSUN struck again just three minutes later when Giovanni Aguilar collected a loose ball, dribbled to his left and finished low on the nearside from just outside the 18-yard box.
30 | Roessler's corner kick found Whelan at the near post, and the later swiftly finished into the top corner of the goal. Vogel slashed into the box on the attack to draw the CSUB corner.
53 | CSUN's Ethan Benham carried the ball across the top of the box, before dropping a pass on the foot of Reveles, who sent a long, bouncing shot back across the goal mouth for a 3-1 lead. 74 | Barry picked up the first assist of his career with a cross-field pass that was one touched into the far-left side of the goal by Vogel, evening the score at three goals apiece.
78 | O'Hara's fifth goal of the season came less than four minutes later when his deflected shot bounced up and over the sprawling CSUN goalkeeper for the game-winning strike. Vogel assisted on the play.
