Roadrunner Winning Streak Snapped in Riverside

Riverside, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield opened the scoring, but UC Riverside scored the final three goals of the game to snap the Roadrunners two-game winning streak, 3-1, on Saturday night in Riverside. Bakersfield falls to 1-1-0 in Big West Conference action, and 2-6-1 on the year.
 
"Our effort and energy were great tonight," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "This was a good and competitive conference match up, with only a few moments separating the result."
 
After a Tom Shepherd goal gave CSUB a first-half lead, the Highlanders turned up the pressure to score three straight.  
 
UCR tied the game with less than two minutes remaining in the opening half, before midfielder Oscar Penate won the game with a pair of goals in a six-minute stretch of the second half.
 
"We opened the second half well, and the goal came against the run of play," Grant said. "We'll move forward, rest and get ready for (Cal State Fullerton on) Wednesday."
 
Shepherd's goal was his first of the season, his sixth as a Roadrunner and the seventh of his NCAA career.  
 
Carlos Gonzalez made three saves for the Highlanders, while Scott Pengelly produced a pair of stops in 74 minutes of action for the `Runners. Freshman Sucre Herrera played the final sixteen minutes in his first career appearance.
 
CSUB returns home on Wednesday, Oct. 6 versus Cal State Fullerton on Viva Los `Runners night. The event will feature live music, local food trucks and more in a celebration of Latinx culture and CSUB's Latinx community. 32 | Shepherd put the `Runners on the board in the first half when he finished high into the right-side of the Highlander goal.
43 | A UC Riverside corner set up the game-tying goal late in the half. Freymar Omarsson's header slipped past Pengelly for the equalizer.
60 | Penate gave UCR its first lead of the night when he dribbled around a pair of CSUB defenders and finished to the lower right corner from 20 yards.
66 | Penate collected his second goal of the night just six minutes later when his shot following a UCR corner was deflected into the lower right corner of the goal.
