O'Hara Scores as CSUB Draws with Lancers

Bakersfield, Calif. – Aodhan O'Hara scored his first goal as a Roadrunner, lifting CSU Bakersfield to a 1-1 double overtime draw with visiting California Baptist, Thursday night at the Main Soccer Field. CSUB improves to 0-2-1 on the young season.

"Tonight was a difficult game and a gritty performance from both teams," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "There are small details in all the matches we play, but I thought we worked hard to win this one tonight and we certainly weren't going to lose the game."

A tightly contest first half resulted in just three combined shots on goal, before play opened up in the second half when CBU's David Cordes was shown his second yellow card of the match.

Despite playing down a man due to the ejection, it was the Lancers who struck first when Brian Gonzalez raced down the wing and netted his second goal in as many games.

The `Runners didn't trail for long. Defensive pressure from midfielder Ricardo Soza forced the CBU back line into an error and the ball bounced directly to the foot of O'Hara. While the first goal of his Bakersfield career, it was the 10th college goal for O'Hara who scored nine times over four seasons at Alabama-Birmingham.

Neither team could break through over the final 36 minutes of regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtimes, forcing the former Western Athletic Conference rivals to settle for the tie.

Freshman goalkeeper Scott Pengelly made three saves for the `Runners, including a pair of diving stops. His best save of the night came in the 63rd minute when he lunged to his right to stop Emiel Deconinck's free kick that had deflected off the Bakersfield wall.

CSUB outshot the Lancers 17-15 and earned eight corners to CBU's three.

Bakersfield returns to action Sunday for a home game against Pacific at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase on GoRunners.com/Tickets.

Scoring Summary:
* 51 | Chris Heckenberg's long pass from the center of the field sprung Gonzalez down the left wing. Gonzalez dribbled through the Bakersfield defense and sent a sailing shot across the goal and into the top-far corner to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead.
* 54 | The `Runners answered just three minutes later when Ricardo Soza's defensive pressure forced a turnover that deflected directly onto the foot of Aodhan O'Hara. O'Hara spun and one touched a shot back into the nearside of the goal to even the score.
