Bakersfield Breaks Through Late at Gonzaga

Spokane, Wash. – Senior forward Aodhan O'Hara scored with four minutes to go in regulation, lifting CSU Bakersfield to a 2-1 win over Gonzaga, on a rainy Friday night in Spokane, Wash. The Roadrunners won for the first time this season, while the Bulldogs lost for the first time in four outings.

"I'm really pleased for our lads," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "They deserved the result tonight. It was an entertaining match with quality efforts from both teams, and gives us positive energy as we approach our Big West Conference schedule."

O'Hara's goal was his league-leading fourth of the season and could not have come at a better time for CSUB, snapping a six-game winless streak in tonight's non-conference finale.

Defender Harry Downing also found the back of the net for Bakersfield, opening the scoring in the 58th minute. It was the second goal of the central defender's career at CSUB. Niklas Roessler collected an assist on the play.

"We're delighted with our to get this win," Downing said. "It was hard-fought and well deserved, and we'll take this momentum into the Big West games ahead."

Freshman goalkeeper Scott Pengelly made all three of his saves in the second half, stifling several Bulldog chances while the game was tied at one. He earned the first win of his `Runner career with the result.

Bakersfield had seven shots on goal to Gonzaga's four, while the Zags held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Roadrunners will look to carry tonight's momentum into their Big West Conference opener at CSUN, on Sept. 29. Bakersfield then travels to UC Riverside on Oct. 2, before its Big West Opener on Oct. 6 against Cal State Fullerton on 'Viva Los `Runners' night at the Main Soccer Field.

76 | A short Gonzaga corner led to chaos in front of the Bakersfield goal later in the half. Consecutive Bulldog headers bounced straight up into the air, before the ball landed on the foot of GU's Logan Dorsey, who flicked the ball just across the line, inside the right post, to knot the score at one.

86 | A long clear defensive clear from CSUB's Hesron Barry led to a critical turnover by the Zags' back line. O'Hara was Johnny on the spot, collecting, turning and chipping the game winner inside the far post for his fourth goal of the season.
