Aztecs Slip Past `Runners in San Diego

Bakersfield, Calif. – San Diego State's Kyle Colonna finished off a late first half set piece with his first goal of the season, providing the final margin as CSU Bakersfield fell to the Aztecs on the road Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Roadrunners to 0-5-1 on the year, with one non-conference match-up remaining before the team opens Big West play.

"I thought our quality and effort was exceptional today," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "Our discipline was poor in a couple of vital moments, but these moments and all our non-conference matches will make us better and prepare us for the Big West season."

The `Runners best chance to equalize came in the final seconds of the first half when midfielder Carlos Armendariz' long drive was punched aside by SDSU goalkeeper Jacob Castro with one second remaining in the frame.

CSUB outshot the Aztecs by an 11-7 margin for the game, with each team registering a single shot on goal.

Armendariz led Bakersfield with four shots attempted, while Ricardo Soza accounted for three.

The game was physical from the outset with the teams combining for 32 fouls and eight yellow cards. The `Runners were shown yellow five times, including a pair for defender Bryson Hankins forcing him from the game in the 66th minute.

CSUB will close out the non-conference slate on Friday, Sept. 17 at Gonzaga before opening its inaugural Big West campaign at CSUN on Sept. 29.

Scoring Summary:
36 | Colonna gave the Aztecs a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute. After Michael Vogel was shown a yellow card for a foul committed outside the box, SDSU's Roux Donovan stepped into a free kick to set up Colonna for the game's only goal.
