Bakersfield Comeback Bid Comes Up Short at #22 GCU

Phoenix, Ariz. – CSU Bakersfield outshot Grand Canyon 21-9 and put twice as many attempts on target, but couldn't complete the comeback, falling to the `Lopes 2-1 on Sunday evening in the desert. Carlos Armendariz scored his second goal of the season for the Roadrunners, who fall to 0-2 in the early going.

"We gave a big effort in a very emotional game," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "It was disappointing to concede the second goal and it cost us in the end, but we've been in two top matches that will make us better for the season ahead."

GCU got off to a quick start when Marco Alfonso scored in the 18th minute, and kept the pressure on Bakersfield, until midfielder Ariel Aguas drew a red card 23 minutes into the contest forcing the Antelopes to play with ten men the rest of the way.

The `Runners immediately took control of the games' momentum, creating chance after chance over the remainder of regulation.

Twice CSUB came inches from tying the score in the first half as both Michael Vogel and Aodhan O'Hara had goals taken off the board on offsides calls.

An Antelope goal against the run of play put Bakersfield into a deeper hole before Armendariz struck for his second penalty kick goal of the season in the 63rd minute.

In the 72nd minute Tom Shepherd appeared to get behind the GCU back line and draw another penalty kick opportunity, but he was ruled just offside on the play by the sideline referee.

The `Runners continued to attack in waves and generate great chances, none more dangerous than Armendariz' 83rd minute volley that slipped just past the left post.

Grand Canyon goalkeeper Rafael Guerrero made eight saves in his first career start for the Antelopes. Scott Pengelly stopped a pair for Bakersfield.

Armendariz led CSUB with nine shots attempted, including four on target, while Ricardo Soza added three shots on goal of his own.

The `Runners return to the Main Soccer Field next week for a pair of non-conference home games against California Baptist and The University of The Pacific on Thursday and Sunday, respectfully. Tickets can be purchased at GoRunners.Com/Tickets.

Scoring Summary:
18 | Following a CSUB chance, the Antelopes countered up the left-side of the field before Marco Alfonso finished off a quick passing play with a 30-yard strike past a diving Scott Pengelly. Justin Rasmussen and Maximilian Moeller picked up assists on the play.
58 | Alfonso struck again in the second half on a one timer off a pass from Rasmussen. Rasmussen earned his second assist of the night, dancing back and forth on the left-side of the box before threading a pass across the six-yard box.
63 | Armendariz converted his second PK in as many games after a teammate snuck behind the GCU defense and was hauled down just outside the six-yard box.
