Roadrunners Let Home-Opener Slip Against APU

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – It wasn't a performance CSU Bakersfield head coach Sebastian Vecchio was pleased with, but the home-opener against Azusa Pacific late Thursday afternoon would serve as an invaluable lesson for the remainder of the Roadrunners 2021 campaign.

It took one misstep at the wrong time, allowing a goal against in the 67th minute on a penalty. It would prove to be the game-winner as the Cougars earned an exhibition win and Bakersfield dropped 0-1-1 in early non-conference play.

Coach Vecchio was, "extremely disappointed in our performance today. We didn't show up to play and that's on me. The team wasn't ready to play, and I am responsible for it. We will get on the training ground, coach our group up and be ready for Saturday."

Bakersfield spent majority of the first period defending their own attacking third as APU controlled the area 41% of the time. CSUB had a few good plays at goal but couldn't connect for an attempt, recording one shot and zero corners in the half.

The Roadrunners finished the match with three shots – one on frame – and one corner. Freshman goalkeeper Flavia Burrell made a career-high eight saves in the 0-1 loss.

"Credit to APU for coming in here and being the better team on the day," added Vecchio. "I am not bothered by the loss as much as how we lost. We lacked character today, we lacked bite and there was no urgency to compete!"

CSU Bakersfield women's soccer returns to the pitch on Saturday for a 7 PM showdown with central valley rival  Fresno State, at the Main Soccer Field.
