Bakersfield Drops Home Opener, 2-1

Bakersfield, Calif. – San Jose State's Omar Lemus pounced on a loose ball and raced end-to-end, scoring the game winning goal, as CSU Bakersfield fell in its home opener, 2-1, Thursday night at the Main Soccer Field in front of an announced crowd of 1,093.

"I thought for the occasion our energy levels could have been even higher," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "I think we'll regret that a little bit because we found ourselves in the lead, but credit to San Jose they moved the ball and played well tonight."

The Roadrunners grabbed the lead in the 34th minute when midfielder Carlos Armendariz stepped into a penalty kick and finished confidently into the right side of the goal, but two second-half Spartan tallies were two much to overcome.

Armendariz led the `Runners with three shot attempts.

Scott Pengelly finished with a pair of saves for Bakersfield, who were out shot by SJSU 15-9 overall and 4-2 in chances on goal.

David Sweeney made one save in the Spartan goal to earn the victory.

At halftime members of CSUB's classes of 2024 and 2025 participated in the annual Rowdy Run, a tradition that was lost during the cancellation of the 2020 campaign.

Bakersfield returns to action Sunday, with its first road game of the season, at #22 Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz. The `Runners next home game is scheduled for Sept. 2 against California Baptist, with tickets available at GoRunners.com/Tickets.
