Game Recap: Baseball |

Bakersfield Sweeps Saturday Twin Bill

Bakersfield, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield used a relentless offensive attack and dominant relief pitching to sweep Cal Poly in a double header Saturday afternoon at Hardt Field. The Roadrunners have captured the first three games of the series, guaranteeing themselves their fourth Big West series win of the season ahead of Sunday's finale.

"We did a little bit of everything today," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "We had great pitching, we let our defense play and they turned a number of key double plays, and our offense executed a great approach. Today was a true team performance."

Bakersfield out-slugged the Mustangs in game one, coming from behind once again to earn a 7-6 victory. The `Runners scored four times in the fifth inning to tie the game at four and added a three-run seventh inning to take the lead for good.

Relievers Davonte Butler, Art Joven & Cody Tucker combined to throw 5.2 innings, allowing just four hits and a pair of Cal Poly earned runs. Joven would collect his third win of the season and Tucker his second save.

The `Runners used a big fifth inning to break open the late game as well. Nick Grossman broke a 1-1 tie with a long solo-home run to right, and Aaron Casillas and Jacen Roberson followed with RBI to make it 4-1.

Noah Cordova pitched 5.2 innings of one run ball to earn the win in his first start since the 2019 season.

Left-handers Graham Kuck and Jack Lee allowed just two hits over the final 3.1 to slam the door.

Tyler Jorgensen led CSUB with five hits in eight at bats over the course of the double header.

Casillas, Roberson, Nick Salas and Eric Charles all had three hits in the twin bill.

Roberson's day included his fifth home run of the year.

The same two teams will meet again in tomorrow's series finale, with Bakersfield in search of its first Big West series sweep behind starter Roman Angelo. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

How It Happened – Game One:
• Cal Poly scored first for the second straight game, plating three in the top half of the second. After a single and an error put two runners on with one out, Collin Villegas ripped a double down the line in left to score them both. Villegas would later score on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Cole Cabrera.
• Tate Samuelson made it 4-0 Mustangs when he homered down the left-field line with one out in the third inning.
• Bakersfield pushed four men across the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at four. Nick Grossman started the scoring with an RBI double into the left-center field gap. He'd eventually score on Evan Berkey's two-run double down the line in right. Charles drew the `Runners even with a sharp single to center scoring Berkey.
• Cal Poly rallied in the seventh, putting base runners on first and second with just one out. Joven entered in relief and needed just one pitch to induce a third to first double play and the inning.
• CSUB took a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh, when Roberson roped a two-run double into the gap in right-center field and came around to score on Jorgensen's RBI single.
• The Mustang's left the bases loaded in the eighth, when Tucker entered with two outs and got Sam Biller to fly out to left.
• Cal Poly finally inched closer in the ninth, scoring twice on a seeing-eye single from Brooks Lee that scored two and made it 7-6.

How It Happened – Game Two:
• It was Bakersfield who jumped on top early in the second game. Jorgensen led off the bottom of the second with a double into the gap in left-center and scored on Grossman's squeeze bunt down the first-base line.
• Cal Poly knotted things at one run a piece on Myles Emmerson's sacrifice fly to right in the top of the fifth.
• Grossman put CSUB right back in the lead when he blasted the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth well over the fence in right field for his third home run of the year. Back-to-back doubles from Salas and Casillas plated another run, before Casillas scored on a Roberson single to make it 4-1.
• Roberson added a solo home run in the eighth, his fifth of the season, to make it 5-1 CSUB.

Notable:
• Berkey drove in the 50th run of his career on the back end of a two RBI double in the fifth inning of game one.
• Jorgensen extended his hitting streak to 14 games and his on base streak to 27, with at least one hit in both ends of the double header. Each stretch is the longest of his college career, with his on-base run tied for fifth longest in CSUB history.
• Casillas is hitting .409 (9-22) over the past seven games.
• Roberson has driven in a team-high seven in the three games with Cal Poly. Grossman has 5 RBI.
• CSUB is hitting .354 for the series.
• The Roadrunners earned their first double header sweep since a pair of wins on Mar. 2, 2019 against Santa Clara.
• The last time Bakersfield swept a four-game series came on Mar. 8-10, 2019 against Fairleigh Dickinson.
• `Runner Head Coach Jeremy Beard earned the 98th and 99th wins of his Bakersfield career today, he'll look to make it an even 100 in tomorrow's finale.

Quotable:
Head Coach Jeremy Beard
On the versatility of Noah Cordova
"We've used Noah in a lot of different roles. He's pitched out of middle relief and he's been a closer because we've needed the stability he brings out of the bullpen, but he's a starter at heart and he did a heck of a job for us today."

On a strong showing from the CSUB pen…
"You're only as good as your bullpen and ours has been fantastic of late. We work very hard to develop our entire staff. The guys out of the pen have come into games ready to compete and they showed up again today."

On a resurgent `Runner offense…
"Baseball is a game of peaks and valleys. We found ourselves down after last weekend, but our guys made the decision to work hard all week at practice and get back to their quality approach. That showed up today against two very good left-handed starters."
