CSUB Swept in Saturday Double Header

Santa Barbara, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield dropped both ends of Saturday's double header at UC Santa Barbara, falling 6-0 and 13-3 at Ceasar Uyesaka Stadium. The Roadrunners will wrap up the 2021 season tomorrow against the Gauchos.

"Today was a tough day, down some key guys, but we've fought hard against adversity all season long," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "I'm proud of this team's accomplishments on the field and in the classroom. UCSB is playing great baseball, but I know we'll show up tomorrow and give all we have to finish strong."

UCSB starter Rodney Boone was the story in game one, tossing 8.0 innings and allowing just three hits and three walks against 12 strikeouts to earn his 10th win of the season. The Gauchos scored three times in the third inning to break the game open and never trailed.

In game two, CSUB held early leads of 1-0 and 3-2, before back-to-back four-run innings gave UCSB a lead they'd never relinquish.

Cody Holtz homered in game two, driving in a pair for the `Runners.

Tyler Jorgensen and Nick Grossman had a hit in each game, with Grossman doubling in a run in the night cap.

Tomorrow's season finale is set for 1:00 p.m.

How it Happened – Game 1:
• Broc Mortensen gave the Gauchos a 1-0 lead when he connected for his 14th home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the second inning.
• UCSB added three more in the bottom of the third. Zach Rodriguez scored Jordan Sprinkle with an RBI ground out, before Marcus Castanon belted a two-run homer to left to make it 4-0.
• Sprinkle hit UCSB's third long ball of the day, a solo home run to lead off the fifth.
• Kyle Johnson doubled down the line in right to score McClain O'Connor in the sixth and make it 6-0 Gauchos.

How it Happened – Game 2:
Nick Grossman turned on a two-strike, full-count pitch and doubled down the line in right to score Tyler Jorgensen who had singled two batters earlier and give CSUB an early 1-0 lead.
• The Gauchos used three walks, two hit by pitches, a wild pitch and a squeeze play to score twice and take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first.
• CSUB answered on Cody Holtz' fourth home run of the season, a two-run laser just inside the foul pole in left to make it 3-2 Bakersfield.
• A single and two more hit batters loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, before McClain O'Connor unloaded them with one swing to give UCSB a 6-3 lead.
• The Gauchos scored four more times in the fourth on RBI singles from Rodriguez and Castanon, an RBI groundout from Mortensen and a solo home run from Jason Willow.
• Willow added an RBI ground out and Johnson picked up an RBI single in the 6th to make it 12-3 Gauchos.
• Pinch hitter Nick Oakley singled in a run in the 7th to make it 13-3 and invoke the 10-run rule.

Notable:
• Jorgensen had started 54 consecutive games at first base for Bakersfield, before opening today's first game as the `Runner right fielder.
• Holtz' home run was his fourth of the season, he moves into a three-way tie for second on the team in homers this season.
• Skuija hit five Gauchos in game two, matching a CSUB single-game record.
